It’s not often that a movie comes around where every new actor joining the project is headline-worthy. But then again, most movies aren’t made by Christopher Nolan. Whether it’s a mind-bending story waiting to happen or simply an impressively robust cast of big names, there’s always something worth talking about when it comes to this particular filmmaker.
The latest update in that regard involves the latter. Matthias Schweighöfer, who captivated audiences in Zack Snyder’sArmy of the Dead, has joinedNolan’s already star-studded upcoming projectOppenheimer. His own role is unknown at this time, but given how the director has been casting the film so far, odds are it will be somebody important. This is a pretty heavy story, after all, based on the Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin biographical bookAmerican Prometheus.

The rest ofOppenheimer’s cast is already a borderline intimidating list of heavy-hitters. Along with Schweighöfer, the film will featureCillian Murphy in the title role as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist who famously took part in the creation of the first atomic bomb. The two will be joined by Rami Malek, Josh Hartnett, Kenneth Branagh, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, and even Robert Downey Jr., and that’s just scratching the surface. The Suicide Squad’s David Dastmalchianalso recently joined up.
Schweighöfer made waves with his enjoyable performance as expert thief Ludwig Dieter inArmy of the Dead. In fact, he had such an impact on the film that Netflix quickly greenlit a prequel revolving around his character. TitledArmy of Thieves, the retroactive predecessor featured Schweighöfer in both the starring role and the director’s chair. Reviews were largely mixed, but it’s still a heck of an accomplishment. Not bad for a breakout star.
Nolan is well-known for thinking outside the box when it comes to casting his films. So it should also come as little surprise to hear that he alsojust addedDrake and Joshstar Josh Peckto the film. Audiences initially balked at the idea of Heath Ledger playing The Joker inThe Dark Knight, but as tragically as that story ended, he still went on to become one of the most iconic depictions of the character. Granted,Oppenheimerisn’t exactly a fictional story with “characters,” but there are still plenty of chances for unexpectedly beloved performances.
With a cast like this, apparently Nolan has some big ideas ready to implement with his upcoming movie. The people involved don’t appear to be particularly diverse, but they’re definitely up for the job. Here’s hoping fans enjoy the experience whenOppenheimerpremieres next summer.
Oppenheimerwill release in theaters on July 21st, 2023.
