Nintendo’s upcomingAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsis more hotly anticipated than ever following a30-minute Nintendo Directlast week. While many have been eagerly waiting to jump into the calm, lackadaisicalAnimal Crossinguniverse, Chilean illustrator Camila Cumplido has instead been imagining what it would be like if the series' characters were dropped into an entirely different game.
Cumplido posed the idea of aDungeons & Dragons-inspired “Animal CrossingRPG” by posting a drawing of the purple cat villager Bob dressed as a rogue and the blue frog villager Lily dressed as a mage on Twitter February 17. Over the next week she began posting more drawings, which culminated in a collective Tweet today that, as of this writing, has received over 16,000 likes and nearly 6,000 retweets in about ten hours.

The three drawings that followed Bob and Lily depict some of the more popular recurring characters with central roles inAnimal Crossing: Tom Nook’s twin nephews Timmy and Tommy as a sword-and-shield wielding knight duo, musician K.K. Slider as a bard, andsecretarial darling Isabelleas a druid. Cumplido has a number of other fantasy-inspired character sketches and backgrounds on her website, as well as illustrations inspired by other Nintendo properties likePokemonandThe Legend of Zelda.
The sextuplet look like they would be right at home serving as the adventuring party in a game ofD&D, with full credit to Cumplido for blending the cutesy style ofAnimal Crossingwith a traditional fantasy aesthetic. It’s not even that hard to imagine them getting into a cliched bout of tavern shenanigans givenIsabelle’s questionable drinking choicesin footage from the Nintendo Direct.
After a delay last year,Animal Crossing: New Horizonsis set to release on July 28, 2025. The recent Direct has confirmed thatNew Horizonswill get post-launch updateson top of the bevy of customization options for each player, the ability to completely terraform one’s island, and plenty more that should keep the game running for a long time to come.
WithNew Horizonshaving at least 383 possible villagers, it’s hard not to wonder what RPG niche each and every one might fit into. Chances are Cumplido could have a lot more fantastic work ahead of her if any future commissions ask to expand the alternate universe she’s brought to life.
