Octopath Traveler Rated For the PS4, PS5

Square Enix’s RPG may now be finally be on its way to PlayStation consoles, as suggested by the fact that it has just received an age classification from the Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee. The rating, first spotted byGematsu, indicates thatOctopath Traveleris on its way to both the PS4 and PS5. Based on Square Enix’s track record with this sort of regulatory legwork, the timing of the newly surfaced rating indicates that the game may reach PlayStation gamers before the end of 2024.

This seemingly likely release would help amend the unusual platform strategy that the Japanese publisher has used for the series up until now. Namely, although the first entry in the franchise has yet to make its way to PlayStation consoles,Octopath Traveler 2was treated to a day-one releaseon both the PS4 and PS5, in addition to the Nintendo Switch and PC. On the other hand, Xbox users are still waiting for the second game, but did get a chance to play its predecessor.

This erratic platform strategy could have something to do with the fact thatOctopath Traveleris an anthology series, not unlikeFinal Fantasy. Since there’s little connection between the two games, the publisher may have felt that not releasing them in order on PlayStation consoles wouldn’t have a significant impact on their sales. But withSquare Enix now being adamant about pursuing multi-platform publishingmore aggressively, it would appear thatOctopath Travelerwill be among the first titles to benefit from that strategic shift, which is largely happening due to the company’s declining profits.

The critically-acclaimed JRPG, which has five accolades and another eight award nominations to its name, may not be the only series entry to receive a port in the near future; the previously announcedXbox version ofOctopath Traveler 2is reportedly set to debut in June 2024. The sequel is even said to be a day-one Xbox Game Pass release.
