In a recent interview,Bungiecreative lead Robbie Stevens and narrative designer Nikko Stevens discussed the future ofDestinyand seemed agreeable to an idea that should make many gamers very excited.

When asked if Bungie would be open to considering a movie or television adaptation of the series, Stevens replied simply, “Anything is possible.” Though this is definitely not confirmation of any such projects in the near future, the response shows that the development studio is at least open to the idea. And because thesplit with Activisionreturned all ownership of theDestinyIP to Bungie, it is now free to make such decisions if the opportunity arises.

ADestinymovie or TV series would be welcome not only for long-time fans of the franchise but for gamers who might be interested in the games but are intimidated by the massive amount of existingDestinylore. A screen adaptation could serve as a CliffsNotes for newcomers, a refresher for series vets, and a huge potential moneymaker for film studios or TV networks.

There have beenmovie or television adaptations of video gamesfor decades, most often not with the greatest success either critically or financially. Over the years, announcements of movies based on video games became almost a joke or something to dread. More recently, however, the translation of beloved video game worlds to the big or small screen has resulted in unexpected success and general viewer satisfaction.

Season one ofThe Witcher, which debuted on Netflix in December 2019, became one of thenetwork’s most popular series of the year, resulted in a huge boost in sales ofThe Witcher 3video game, and even caused the books to temporarily sell out on Amazon. There are now a number of upcoming video game adaptations for gamers to get excited about—Showtime’s live-actionHaloseries, Netflix’s take onTom Clancy’s The Division, and Sony Picture’s long-awaited interpretation ofUnchartedjust to name a few. The addition of aDestinymovie to that list would doubtlessly be met more with anticipation and excitement than dread.
