The 2019Call of Duty: Modern Warfarereboot presses the reset button on Infinity Ward’sModern Warfareseries, allowing the story to take place in modern times with new versions of some ofCall of Duty’s most popular characters. Fans have started speculating about how aModern Warfaresequel will introduce some of the characters not seen in the reboot game, and this includes an interesting theory about Gary “Roach” Sanderson. Please note that this article will havespoilersfor both theCall of Duty: Modern WarfareandModern Warfare 2campaigns.

For the uninitiated,Roach is the main character inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, who meets a grisly end at the hands of General Shepherd. Roach wasn’t inCall of Duty 4, and so it’s not exactly surprising that he wasn’t featured in theModern Warfarereboot game. However, there’s a theory that Roach actually was inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare, but that he’s going by a different name.

The theory is that Alex will eventually go by the name “Roach” in the rebootedModern Warfareuniverse. The evidence for this theory revolves around the fact that Alex survived a seemingly deadly explosion at the end of theModern Warfarecampaign, and while he lost a leg,Modern WarfareSeason 3revealed that he got a prosthetic one installed in its place. Cockroaches, as some may know, are known for their ability to regrow their legs and survive catastrophic events. This could explain how he gets the “Roach” nickname.

Another reason why some fans think that Alex may be Roach is the fact that Price didn’t mention Roach at the end of the campaign. The end of theCall of Duty: Modern Warfarecampaign sees Captain Price putting together a team consisting of Gaz, Soap, andSimon “Ghost” Riley, but no mention of Roach is made. It’s possible that this is because Alex will be Roach, and it’s unclear at that point in time if Price even knows if Alex is alive or dead.

If Alex does become Roach in theinevitableModern Warfaresequel, it will be interesting to see if he shares the same fate as the original Roach. The newModern Warfaregames, while using many of the same characters, appear to be featuring different story beats, and so it’s possible Roach and Ghost will live longer this time around.
