Call of Duty: Warzoneis no stranger to over-the-top content. For example, the 80s Action Heroes event saw players controlling the likes of Rambo and John McClane and battling through some of their movies’ most iconic settings. Still, the addition Raven Software is making toCall of Duty: Warzoneis even sillier, especially since it seems to be part of the actual narrative.

WithCall of Duty: WarzoneSeason 3’s trailer teasing Godzilla, and another trailer showing that the beast will be facing off with King Kong, the battle royale will soon become the home for a giant monster fight. While this could prove entertaining for fans of King Kong and Godzilla, those that care about the ongoingCall of Duty: Warzonestory could see their appearance as too silly. While featuring an event built around Kaiju is fun, as the beasts can be in-game bosses or serve as the storm, working them into the story is truly strange.

Call of Duty: Warzone’s Ongoing Stories Were Fairly Grounded

For context,Call of Duty: Modern WarfareandCall of Duty: Black Opsfeatured far more groundedWarzonestories that did not incorporate characters from other IPs. In the case ofModern Warfare’sWarzonestory, players saw Captain Price hunt down Victor Zakhaev and stop him from launching a nuclear missile.Black Ops Cold War’s storyline was a direct continuation of the campaign, as it saw Stitch go to war with Adler and revealedthe true identity of Perseus.

Prior to Season 3’s intro cutscene,Call of Duty: Vanguard’sWarzonestory had been grounded as well. The first cutscene saw Butcher landing on a beach and finding a secret Nazi bunker, while the second focused onNebula Vgas he had learned about within the underground facility. Both were the usual plot points for aCall of Dutygame, and for its first half, the Season 3 cinematic seems to be continuing the trend. However, the back half of the cinematic saw Butcher reveal that the use of Nebula V had awoken something, and Godzilla’s roar was heard.

Since then, another cinematic has released that makes the intentions of Activision and Raven Software very clear, asGodzilla and Kong are shown in all their glory. How this will translate to gameplay remains to be seen, but it is hard not to see the shift to giant monsters as hilarious and unexpected. Nobody could have predicted thatCall of Duty: Vanguard’s story would lead to this, as players went from stopping the Nazis from using chemical weapons to encountering a giant monkey and nuclear lizard.

Call of Duty: Warzone’sVanguardstoryline still has a few chapters left, and it will be odd to return to normal storytelling after this absurd detour. Future breakdowns of the story will be strange, as players will be following a normal World War 2 plot when Godzilla and Kong suddenly show up. Due to how weird their cameos are, it will be hard to take anything else that happens seriously, as theVanguardportion of theWarzonestory has now strayed too far from reality. Considering that Butcher is telling this story toFrank Woods, Adler, Mason, and Hudson in 1984, this is even more laughable, as he would have had to randomly start talking about Kaiju.

With the newerCall of Dutytitles being part of one shared universe, those stories are impacted by the decision to add Kong and Godzilla as well. The same universe that featured Stitch’s plan for a Greater Russia saw Godzilla and Kong fighting on a Pacific island, which immediately makes the overall story seem a bit silly. WhileCall of Dutyhas embraced plenty of outrageous content like aSnoop Dogg Operator bundle, Snoop has not been worked into the ongoing story. Had Godzilla and Kong just been a fun, non-canon event, there would be no issue. However, the decision to make them part of the ongoing story is an odd one, as it is hard to take anything that happens next seriously because of it.

Call of Duty: Warzoneis available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
