Looks like Captain Kirk may have a bit of a fondness for a galaxy far, far away. Chris Pine, who just came off a substantial supporting role inWonder Woman 1984, has apparently spoken with director Patty Jenkins about her upcomingStar Warsfilm,Rogue Squadron, and claims he’s “ecstatic” about the story she’s looking to tell.
During a recent interview,Pine spoke about his experienceon the set ofWonder Woman 1984as well as a certain standout scene where his improvisation skills captured the hearts of audiences. But an unexpected question regarding Jenkins' newly announced entry into theStar Warsuniverse elicited a surprising answer. The interviewer seemed to be attempting to prompt an admission from Pine that he wanted to be in the film, but while he didn’t exactly take the bait, he did reveal that he’d spoken to Jenkins about the film.

In the short interview withCollider, interviewer Steve Weintraub brought up how Pine has already had some experience with multiple cinematic universes (as well as the space setting), then inquired on whether the actor had attempted to leverage that legacy to secure a spot in Jenkins’Rogue Squadron. “I had spoken to her about, not my involvement, but the story,” Pine answered, “it sounds really, really great.” His praise for Jenkins and her story also seems to suggest that maybe there are some new ideas in play, with a further comment stating “I’m ecstatic for her, I’m excited for what she’s about to embark on. If there’s anyone that can reimagine and breathe fresh new life into it, it’s her.”
The slight tangent from the question’s original point can easily be forgiven since, in the process, Pine suggested that he now knows whatRogue Squadronwill be about. Of course, anyone could make a similar claim and then follow it with “it will be about starfighter pilots doing starfighter things,” but it seems pretty clear that Jenkins shared at least part of the film’s actual story with him. While it appears likely that Pine won’t be involved with the film, some fans may still find his praise for the story to be reassuring.
The fact thatJenkins already has a story in mind forRogue Squadronisn’t entirely surprising. In the reveal for the newly announced film, she spoke fondly about her long-time goal to create “the greatest fighter pilot movie of all time,” so it’s very likely that she has held on to a rough idea for some time and has only been waiting for the opportunity to use it. Pine’s “breathe fresh new life into it” line also brings up the idea that maybe this will be more than just a standard fighter pilot movie set in theStar Warsuniverse. If Jenkins wants to take some risks, the franchise could always use a good shake-up. Plus, even without Pine, there are surely plenty ofactors and actresses who could really contribute toRogue Squadron.
Of course, some aspects of the fandom aren’t particularly favorable to change and evolution. So hopefullyRogue Squadronends up being a film that can please as many people as possible while still allowing Jenkins to tell the story she wants to tell.
