Destiny 2players debate the usability of the Necrochasm exotic auto rifle which not only has a major flaw compared to itsDestinycounterpart, but also struggles against other Weapons of Sorrow. Season of the Witch introduced a number ofnew mechanics into the sci-fi world ofDestiny 2, including a unique deckbuilding mechanic that players can fill out with both major and minor arcana. Earned as rewards from completing activities, completing rewards, and more, minor arcana gives players resources and other bonuses, while Major Arcana can be unlocked by completing an objective which grants a modifier that can be triggered during Season of the Witch activities.
Season 22 also saw the arrival of Crota’s End, a reprisedDestinyraid that kicked off another Day One Race among the community. Alongside the return of Crota, the returning raid also brought back theDestinyfan favorite exotic auto-rifle known as Necrochasm. However, the weapon is a little different than fans may remember, as its Exotic Perk Cursebringer now requires a precision final blow in order to proc the explosion effect and refilling the magazine. This change has left the community divided with many now questioning the weapon’s usability when compared to other similar weapons.

The discussion appeared on theDestiny 2subReddit by a user named jamer2500, initially questioning why players would actively choose the Necrochasm over the Osteo Striga exotic SMG. Both weapons are intended to be used to quickly clear ads, though with the perk change Bungie made to Necrochasm, many have pointed out that it falls behind Osteo Striga which can proc a poison wave for any enemy kill, which also refills the magazine. Without requiring headshots, the Osteo Striga can achieve similar results in a much easier way while also overflowing the magazine to never have to reload as long as enemies are being taken out. Not only that, Osteo Striga also has an advantage of being customized through crafting by leveling the weapon up.
While there were plenty that agreed with jamer2500’s assessment, there were also those who mentioned that the original Necrochasm inDestinyeventually received a buff that changed the precision requirement to just be body shots instead. While there appears to be hope that Bungie could make a similar update to the weapon down the road, considering thatNecrochasm still requires a bit of a grind and RNG luck to acquire it, there are those who believe that Osteo Striga will continue to be the better option.
There appears to be some speculation that the change to make the weapon require more skill is intentional and wouldn’t be the first time Bungie has gone down this path. The Vex Mythoclast, anotherreturning exotic weapon alongside the Vault of Glass raid, was initially undertuned by Bungie to prevent it from becoming a dominant force for the few who were able to acquire it. Over the past couple of years, the weapon has fluctuated a bit through various updates ultimately changing its viability over time.
