Elden Ringis notorious for its difficult bosses, a staple of almost any FromSoftware title, but its infamous Fire Giant is still causing players grief with its difficult hit boxes and annoying dodge rolls. One player took to Reddit to share their frustrations with the Fire Giant, posting a video of theElden Ringboss continuously rolling around the boss arena for over a minute straight, each time the player or their cooperative partner got close. While bosses spamming certain moves isn’t uncommon in previous FromSoftware titles, this example in particular highlights a big flaw in the Fire Giant boss fight.

Elden Ringbosses are known for occasionally spamming their moves like Malenia’s notorious Waterfowl Dance or Godfrey’s stomp attack, and the Fire Giant is no exception. The Fire Giant is an infamous boss, with many players citing its odd hitboxes and annoying roll as some of its most notable flaws. Among the complained about moves the boss utilizes are its oddly timed slam attack, and its distance gaining dodge roll.

In the featured video, the boss uses the dodge rolla staggering 13 times in a row. Each time one of the two players gets within range of the boss' hitbox, he rolls away to the other side of the boss arena. Due to the players' spacing he seemingly gets caught in a loop and uses the move constantly rather than attacking either of the two cooperative players, forcing an annoying repetitive chase.

While many of the bosses featured inElden Ringare known for their difficulty, they rarely rely on methods such as spamming particular attacks or healing to gain an edge over the player.Bosses like Margit are acclaimedin online forums, due to their seemingly hard yet fair programming. Among the over 70 bosses featured inElden Ring, it’s incredibly rare to find a one that relies on repeating attacks or odd hitboxes like the Fire Giant does.

FromSoftware as a studio has almost perfectedboss design in its “Soulsborne” titles. While the studio usually gets its boss design right more often than not, in certain cases the way it programs boss fights can become problematic. The Fire Giant spamming its dodge roll move is a clear-cut example of when the way a boss is programmed can backfire. The two players aren’t allowed to get close enough to even damage the boss, unfairly prolonging the fight due to a flaw in the boss' move set that has been in the game since launch.

Elden Ringis available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
