Summary
The various Magma Wyrm bosses throughoutElden Ringdominate their arenas and pressure players with their steady stream of attacks that leave pools of magma that will catch careless positioning. However, Great Wyrm Theodorix stands above theMagma Wyrm archetype, thanks in no small part to being the largest and strongest version of the encounter, nestled into a unique environment.
Hidden away in a dark corner of the Consecrated Snowfield, Great Wyrm Theodorix is a secret encounter that waits for players to explore the frozen waterfall outside of the Cave of the Forlorn. Along with the boss itself, the other dangers that hang around this arena also help to make Theodorix more than one of many variations throughoutElden Ringwith extra health and damage.
Great Wyrm Theodorix is Defined by His Arena
Theodorix Follows the Magma Wyrm Trend to Punish Poor Positioning
While a series of powerful sword swings and a rapid charge make Magma Wyrms difficult enough, these dangerous enemies are better defined by the magma that they scatter across the ground. This is equally the case for Theodorix, who will start every attempt by charging at the player and leaving a trail of Magma along the path he takes. However, unlike the Magma Wyrm in theMt. Gelmir sub-area, there’s no ambient lava in the area, which means that the only dangerous ground is that left behind by Theodorix’s attacks.
On top of the standard Magma Wyrm area control, Theodorix’s size gives the boss a more dominating presence that completely fills the space of the arena. When staying in the tight space that the boss starts the fight in, the player can quickly be overcome by the sheer size of the enemy. Of course, venturing away from the frozen waterfall can then give the player some room to breathe, butElden Ringhides enemies throughout the alreadysecret Consecrated Snowfield.
Theodorix Does Not Stand Alone at the Frozen Waterfall
A secondary danger lurks around the arena that Theodorix is fought in, taking the forms of many of the giant enemies that players will likely have already come across throughout The Lands Between. These include theElden Ring’s Giant Crabsand Giant Land Octopi which can often be found around other bodies of water in many of the game’s warmer climates.
However, here by the frozen waterfall, they act as a deterrent against straying too far when busy fighting the giant Magma Wyrm that will already prove a problem on his own.
These extra enemies can influence the fight in multiple ways as well, usually in the obvious method of catching the player off-guard while in the middle of fighting Theodorix. Additionally, these enemies are also aggressive against the boss, which means that the player can goad the giant monsters into damaging and distracting Theodorix by luring them into the arena. It is a high-risk/high-reward strategy, but it can turn the tide in the player’s favor similar to any other ofElden Ring’s Spirit Summons, only without the FP cost.
The Bloat of the Mountaintops of the Giants Infects Theodorix
Deep into the later sections ofElden Ring, many encounters suffer from a simple matter of numbers that make for prolonged fights against enemies that deal unbelievable amounts of damage. While this is most notable in the mandatoryfight againstElden Ring’s Fire Giant, Theodorix also suffers from a massive health pool and high defenses that take what could be a fun and memorable encounter and make it drag a little too long. There are naturally plenty of builds, such as bleed or scarlet rot, that can help mitigate this endgame bloat, but that won’t often be too helpful for a casual playthrough stumbling blindly on what can eventually be an incredibly long and drawn-out fight.
