Elden Ringfeatures a myriad of consumables serving many functions that help the player in a variety of circumstances. With each item given descriptions ranging from impressively detailed to exceptionally vague, it can be hard for Tarnished venturing intoFromSoftware’s beautiful Lands Betweento know how useful an item is without pouring over descriptions, reading wiki pages, and a lot of trial and error.
One item, acquired relatively early inElden Ring, is the Rainbow Stone; provided the brief description, ‘Shines with colored light when placed, serving as a guide,’ players may wonder about the applications of a nicely colored stone in the unforgiving landscape ofElden Ring. However, this little stone hides an incredibly useful utility, making it an invaluable item for exploration.

What Elden Ring’s Rainbow Stones Used For
Rainbow Stones serve to highlight hidden and dangerous pathsin The Lands Between. As players have bemoaned,Elden Ring’sthreshold for a fatal fall is often finickyand difficult to judge.
With the Rainbow Stone in hand, theyno longer have to worry about deadly drops- they may simplyuse a Stone near a ledgethey deem dangerous, and it willreveal how likely a player’s survival will be.
When the Stone makes contact with a surface,it will make a sound and change its color toindicate how precipitous the drop is.
Low tones and colors on the purple end of the spectrum highlight the drop will do little to no damage, whereas high pitches and red colors show the drop will hurt.If a fall will kill the player, the stone will shatter.
Players familiar with the Prism Stone fromDark Souls IIIwill understand how the Rainbow Stone works, and will also know that it can be used tomap out otherwise invisible paths inElden Ring.
How to Get Rainbow Stones
Rainbow Stones are fairly common items that can be found on bodies all over The Lands Between. For a more reliable method of obtaining them, however, players must first learn to craft them.
In order to do this, the Tarnished mustbuy the Crafting Kit from Merchant Kale in the Church of Elleh, unlockingElden Ring’s incredibly advantageous crafting menu. The Church will likely be one of the first locations the player comes across, foundjust north of ‘The First Step’ Site of Gracein Limgrave. Next, players must get the Nomadic Warrior’s Cookbook (7)in one of the earlier areas of the game.
Nomadic Warrior’s Cookbook (7) may be foundat the end of a collapsed bridge near a Finger Reading Crone in Stormhill, to the east of Stormveil Castle.Players who avoided fighting Margit or Godrickby circling the Castle may be familiar with this area, which liesnorth-northwest of Stormhill Shack, southwest of the ‘Lake-Facing Cliffs’ Site of Grace, andwest-southwest of the Divine Tower of Limgrave.
After grabbing the Cookbook, players only need one Ruin Fragment to craft them. These can be found in abundance all across the Lands Between, usuallyglowing on the ground atop the fallen ruinsthat dot the map.
