The anime industry has someinteresting titles lined upfor avid viewers this upcoming Fall 2022 season. Horror anime are almost always a hit or miss - and it’s not unreasonable to have mixed expectations.Housing Complex Cmay be just one of these, however. Taking place in southern Japan as opposed to near the main capital of Tokyo, there lies a bit more potential in its storytelling - as it’s away from the main islands and there are more potentially untold urban legends to delve into. Most anime utilize yurei (or vengeful ghosts) as their source of horror - though in this scenario, the supernatural perpetrator is intentionally left a mystery.

Main character Kimi lives on Iki island in the Nagasaki prefecture. While she enjoys an affordable lifestyle, it always seems like she’s unable to stay away from trouble, and now it’s only gotten worse when the residents of her housing complex begin to disappear and show up dead. Is this a common coincidence, or is she truly cursed?

What We Know

Housing Complex Cwill be produced by Maki Terashima, who was on the production team behindProduction IG’s other noteworthy psychological thrillers such asB: The Beginning,Uzumaki, andGhost in the Shell 2: Innocence. Viewers can expect suspenseful storytelling and a brisk pace in plot, as prior works never left room for a tedious moment to last. Additionally, Terashima’s works exceed in visual storytelling, so audiences will have no trouble following the story - if her previous projects are anything to go off of. The animation will be done byAkatsuki, a more recent studio founded in 2016. Lesser known anime such asTrickster,Chain Chronicles, andSanrio Danshiare a few of its projects prior to 2022. Though they were niche, this could be an opportunity forHousing Complex Cto become its new face.

Beloved voice actors such as Sean Chiplock, Kayli Mills, and Xanthe Huynh will be taking on the roles of Seiichi, Yuri, and Kimi respectively. As of current, there is no information or plans about the Japanese voice cast, though Mami Okada is currently in charge of casting - who’s known for her involvement inSword Art OnlineandDemon Slayer. Moreover, It’s safe to say that for this adaptation, there will be a heavy influence from an overseas staff - let alone talents fromToonamiitself; Bill Millsap and Jason DeMarco are two to name - being the ADR Director and Executive Producer of the project. Because of the outside involvement, however, will any plot related aspects of this project be different? After all, there is a distinct difference in Western and Eastern methods of storytelling.

Potential For A Horrific Success

With its very first debut set to premiere onToonami, rather than Japanese television, this new franchise may be just whatcontemporary horror fans are looking for. In all varieties, so far the premise and production ofHousing Complex Cis entirely experimental - given the fact that there is no prior adaptation to it and that its initial premiere will be overseas before it even begins airing in its home country. Despite the release date being so close, there is still a lot of mystery surrounding the work.

With only one trailer out with no dialogue, it raises multiple questions for how the series intends itself to play out. Will it stray away from the standard supernatural horror? Or perhaps that is their marketing strategy - the whole project was shrouded in mystery, to begin with.
