A modder has decided to turn the Commonwealth ofFallout 4into some kind of volcanic wasteland. TheFalloutseries is known for its interesting and bizarre vaults, and the games are also noteworthy for their landscapes obliterated by a nuclear war that left in its wake a desolate world full of mutated beasts and anarchic societies. Once players leave the relative safety of their underground dwellings, they venture out to greet the remains of the Commonwealth.

While the vanilla experience alone is more than enough to get fans invested, there are plenty of uniqueFallout 4modsout there that offer up even more content, such as new creatures or a custom story built from scratch. Of course, there are even those people in the community who will change the visuals ofFallout 4almost entirely, offering up something that gives a more unique look to what players are used to, perhaps even turning it into a different game.

That’s what user Delicious Vegetable on Nexus Mods has done, at least. As spotted by DSO Gaming, a new mod forFallout 4called “Vulkan - Landscape Retexture” has emerged recently that, as the name suggests, adds new textures to the landscape. In this case, it turns the Commonwealth into a scorched wasteland, covered in burning magma and ash, with vegetation “clinging to life.” According to the description, it is meant to represent the aftermath of a devastating volcanic eruption that occurred just outside Boston, where the game takes place.

The modder says that players are encouraged to play a literal game of “the floor is lava.” In many ways, “Vulkan” makes the entire world look a bit likeFallout 4’s Glowing Sea region, an area that players encounter in the main quest of the game, which is so dangerous and uninhabitable that the developer placed it outside the boundaries of the map. The images on the Nexus Mods page show just how desolate the Commonwealth has now become. So if anyone who’s played the vanilla game thought the city looked like a wasteland before, this mod adds to that by several magnitudes.

AlthoughFallout: New Vegasis the best game in the franchisefor many players, the fourth entry is still pretty solid. After nearly seven years, it seems as though theFallout 4fan base is still going strong, evidenced by the fact that people like Delicious Vegetable are out there putting a new spin on the game with mods aplenty.

Fallout 4is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
