Despite its age,Super Mario Sunshineis still a warmly regarded title in theSuper Mariofranchise. The GameCube classic has been a game that continues to find fans to this day, no doubt helped by it being re-released alongsideSuper Mario 64andSuper Mario Galaxyas part of theSuper Mario 3D All-Starscollection last year. While this helped bring in some fans, some thought that more could be done with the game, or perhaps even a sequel. This is the thought process behind the mod known asSuper Mario Eclipse.

This mod expands the originalSuper Mario Sunshinewith a brand-new story that gives greater focus on the world of Isle Delfino. This is further expanded by including a host of brand-new levels, missions, and explorable overworlds that are all connected to the original island. There’s a lot of fan service and tributes paid to all corners of theMariouniverse in this mod, thanks to the incredibly large team ofSuper Mario Sunshinemodders.

The trailer for the first demo of this mod dropped recently, showcasing all of the new features that will be included. One of the very first things shown is the expanded overworld, where it sees Mario being able to visit reworked locations like Bianco Hills, but also other areas by plane, such asPeach’s Castle fromSuper Mario 64. Other worlds include Daisy Cruiser fromMario Kart: Double Dash, brand-new worlds like Pianta Pit, and even a secret level that involvesSuper Monkey Ball.

The mod will also be adding two playable characters too, one of them being Mario’s brother Luigi. Much like many other games that the green brother has appeared in, he has a stronger jumping ability than Mario, allowing him to reach higher areas than him, but he forgoes the usage of FLUDD. The other playable character is Shadow Mario, the disguisedBowser Jr. fromSuper Mario Sunshine. He also doesn’t use FLUDD, instead wielding a Magic Paintbrush to paint the island in graffiti.

Mario’s moves fromSuper Mario Sunshinehave been expanded upon too, such as using FLUDD to gain a brief boost in height or momentum as he slides on the ground. This mod is still a heavy work in progress, as according to its GameBanana page, only about half of the work is currently done, with some bugs still being present and no console capability. However, based on what’s already shown, this is looking to be one of the most ambitiousSuper Mario Sunshinemods ever made.
