In 2015, Square Enix revealed that it was taking on the massive undertaking of remaking its classic RPGFinal Fantasy 7. But instead of doing a 1:1 remake, Square Enix decided to do something different, going to great lengths to flesh out side characters and provide new story content for franchise fans to enjoy. The result was that the firstFinal Fantasy 7 Remakegame focused almost entirely on Midgar, leaving a lot of the story left to be covered in sequels.
Square Enix finally pulled the curtain back on its nextFinal Fantasy 7 Remakeproject in a special livestream where it officially announcedFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth.Final Fantasy 7 Rebirthis the second installment in theFinal Fantasy 7 Remakeproject, and it’s due for release in winter 2023 as a PlayStation 5 exclusive game. It’s been unclear exactly how many “parts” theFinal Fantasy 7 Remakeproject would consist of, as it would largely depend on how much Square Enix planned on fleshing out each area of the game. If every area inFinal Fantasy 7 Remakereceived as much attention asMidgar, then it would take numerous games for Square Enix to tell the complete story. However, it’s now been confirmed that theFinal Fantasy 7 Remakeproject will be a trilogy.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake,Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and an untitled third game will make up the trilogy. Details on what the third game will entail are scarce at the time of this writing, but Square Enix has reportedly already started development on it. Considering this, it’s possible thatFinal Fantasy 7fans won’t have to deal with all that long of a turnaround time between whenFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirthcomes out and when the third game releases, but that remains to be seen.
It will be interesting to see what part of the story the third game in theFinal Fantasy 7 Remakeproject encompasses. It really depends on what happens inFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirthand how far that goes intoFinal Fantasy 7’s story. That’s anyone’s guess at the time of this writing, but fans will have a much clearer idea when they play the game for themselves in winter 2023 when it releases to the masses.
