There is technically nothing wrong withForspokenand yet the review scores are not that high on it. It’s another action RPG from Square Enix with a sprawling open-world to explore and one of the coolest magic systems in any of their recent games. It looks pretty as well from the character models to the particle effects on the spells.

Those are the positives, but even the negative things aren’t that troubling. There are no game-breaking bugs, for example as it runs well on PS5.These suggestions could improvewhat people think ofForspoken, or it might be too late. Hopefully, Square Enix doesn’t abandon it right out of the gate. There is a good action RPG underneath some unnecessary clutter.

6Add A Photo Mode Shortcut

Kudos to Square Enix for including a photo mode with this game at launch.Final Fantasy 7is another gorgeous-looking action RPG from the company, but that didn’t launch with a photo mode. There’s nothing wrong with the feature inForspoken, but there is something that can be added to make it better.

There is no shortcut for activating photo mode. Players have to pause the game, go into the menu, select photo mode, and then go through whatever specs they want before they can clumsily close out the sub-menu. The design is clunky, and a shortcut would be great to see.

5Dual Spell Casting

BioShockwas one of the coolest reinventions that the horror shooter genre saw in about a decade. One of the coolest parts of that experience was being able to cast spell-like abilities called Plasmids. The first game allowed players to have one ability on one arm, but the subsequent sequels allowed players to dual-wield spells. This could create strategic advantages in those games, but players inForspokencould also take advantage of combos if they coulduse two spellsat once.

Attack spells are bound to the right side of the controller whereas supportive spells are locked to the left. Players can use Bind to glue enemies on the spot to then use an attack spell like Burst Shot to do some damage. Flipping between the two is fine, but it would be so much more epic if players could execute these spells simultaneously instead. The lack of dual-wielding is not a big problem with the game. This is just a suggestion to enhance the action of this RPG.

4Give Players An Early Melee Attack

Purple Magic is Frey’s starting skill tree and all the spells found within are based on Earth-type magic. She can throw rocks at enemies or make plants do her bidding like an RPG version of Poison Ivy. Players can unlock new skill trees every time they take down a Tanta, the rulers of this world. Tanta Silas will be the first true boss players will face around the seven-hour mark.

Defeating her will unlock Red Magic which is based on fire. A lot of these spells are melee based as well which is a good change ofpace for combat. For example, Slice will summon a fiery blade to attack enemies with. Oddly, players can’t use melee attacks until so far into an action RPG. They can finish off enemies with a stabbing animation but that’s it. Is it possible to give the Purple Magic section some sort of early melee attack for Frey to use?

3Add An Online Component

Not every game needs a multiplayer component to be good, butForspokenwould benefit from some kind of online integration. The game could follow the Dark Souls template and have random versions of Frey jump in to challenge players while they explore the world. It would make sense in context with the story since it does dive into the idea of multiverses. Whose to say another Frey isn’t going through the same thing in another world?

The world is devoid of anything spectacular that an invader would at least liven things up.A co-op modewould be nice to have as well, although there aren’t a lot of big bosses to tackle, besides Mutants, that would warrant another player or two to join in. Overall, Square Enix needs to fill that world up with something good and whether that means adding online gameplay to the mix is up to them.

2Magic Parkour Improvements

Frey’s spells are cool to watch in combat, but there are non-combat spells that deserve praise in the game too. Players gain the ability to use a magical version of parkour to run around the world. The further players get, the more fluid Frey’s motions will become. She can climb walls andzip around certainrock pillars punched into the Earth.

It makes getting around fun, but there are small tweaks Square Enix could do to help players out. Namely, they should allow parkour to be used in town.Getting around Cipalcan be a chore due to slow running speeds and invisible walls barring players from jumping around to make their own shortcuts. Cipal, overall, slows down the momentum and that’s not a good thing in an action RPG.

1Remove Watermarks

There is one other thing the developers could do to improve the photo mode in the game. Like a lot ofSquare Enix titles,Forspokenuses watermarks whenever players take photos. It doesn’t matter if they take screenshots while playing the game or while they are in photo mode. Every time a screenshot is taken, a watermark appears.

For most players, this won’t be a problem. For others, the watermark can be distracting especially if it gets in the way of a beautiful landscape photo or if it cuts something off. Be the hero Square Enix and remove these watermarks to encourage more creativity from the fans.
