The “Good” Ending

The good ending, or at least the better ending, is the one that most players are likely to have got the first time around. The game concludes with Jack being rescued by the special forces team after a fearsome hand-to-hand battle with Wyatt. Having survived the ordeal it can be assumed that Jack has been taken to safety.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to save Jess fromher gruesome fate. Even if the player manages to successfully nail all the required timing cues during her combat sequence with Wyatt, she still suffers heavy injuries and is eventually finished off much to Jack’s dismay. There are also no other major decisions that Jess can make during the third and fourth chapters which will result in her surviving the final encounter.

Fort Solis Bad Ending

What many players may not realize is that it is actually possible to finish with an even worse ending than the one in which just Jess dies. While many of the combat triggers are inconsequential in the end, there is one sequence which,if not completed in time, can result in Jack’s death too. This is how players can get the bad ending.

In the bad ending, or more appropriately the very bad ending, since the “good” ending isstill somewhat tragicdespite the player’s best efforts, both Jess and Jack both perish, leaving everyone in the entire vicinity of Fort Solis dead.

In the final escape sequence following Jess’s death, Jack limps away towards a small hangar containing a number of LTV vehicles. It is here that he is to face off with the arch-nemesis of the game, Wyatt. However, if players fail to execute the commands in time as Jack limps across the open wastes toward the hangar door, Wyatt will catch up to him and cause the two to fight out in the open.

If this cut scene is triggered, there is no way for Jack to survive the encounter. Eventually, both he and Wyatt are mortally wounded and both perish on the surface as the camera slowly pans out and ushers in the closing credits.
