With all the new shows and movies coming out from the superhero,Star Wars, and other similarly bombastic areas of the entertainment world, one wouldn’t be blamed for not remembering that there’s a proper prequel toMad Max: Fury Roadstill on its way. Don’t worry, though. Director George Miller hasn’t forgotten aboutFuriosa, and he’s ready to shed a little more light on it.

As deep and well-received asMad Max: Fury Roadwas with audiences and critics alike, it can be easy to forget that the whole movie took place during a very short amount of time. After all, it was a very self-contained story, even if it had far-reaching consequences for those involved. But there’s always more to it, which is why fans are likely in for a real treat when its prequel,Furiosa, finally releases. But what exactly will the new film entail?

According to Miller, it will be even bigger thanFury Road, and not just becauseFuriosais the largest movie ever filmed in Australia. When speaking with Deadline about his long quest to makeFuriosahappen, as well as his other upcoming filmThree Thousand Years of Longing, the acclaimed director offered a glimpse at the time frame of the long-awaited prequel. “All I can say about my excitement about doing it is that it’s definitely exciting,” Miller exclaimed about his own passion for the project, “because even though it’s certainly of that world ofFury Road, it’s also got a lot of the differences we’ve been talking about. Again, it’s uniquely familiar. And probably the biggest difference is the timespan.Fury Roadhappened over three days and two nights and this one happens over 15 years. So, it’s a saga.”

Mad Max: Fury Roadwowed audiences with its visual style and incredible practical effects, as well as with the performances of its main cast, particularly Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa. The character became so beloved that it was almost a foregone conclusion that she’d get her own movie. But since it’s a prequel, they had to recast the part, eventually landing onThe Queen’s Gambitstar Anya Taylor-Joy. Given howFuriosais now confirmed to take place across 15 years, it makes sense they’d have to get a younger star, even if some might argue that digitally de-aging Theron would be a better choice.

This was also all Miller was willing to share aboutFuriosa. When asked how his progress was coming along, he simply answered, “I’ll tell you how it’s going when it’s finished, but it has got off to a lovely start.” It makes sense, particularly consideringhow longFuriosahas been in production, even facing a delay all the way to 2024. But there was a long wait forFury Roadas well, and that movie still remains one of the most critically-acclaimed action films of recent decades.

So while there’s stilla long wait beforeFuriosawill finally see the light of day, fans should be able to rest easy knowing the time isn’t being wasted. Miller is still letting it cook, and now the knowledge that it will be set during a time frame of 15 years should allow for some prime speculation. Here’s hoping the wait only makes the heart grow fonder.
