Summary

Debuting all the way back in 2005, theGod of Warfranchise has been around for almost two whole decades now, and in that time it’s changed quite a bit. TheGod of Warfranchise has experienced two very distinct phases in its life, with each being neatly categorized into the mythological era that they were set in. While theoriginalGod of WarGreek Sagasaw a younger Kratos take his revenge on the entire Greek pantheon in a series of hack-and-slash action games, the more recentGod of WarNorse saga sees a much older Kratos attempting to simply survive in a world that seems out to destroy him and those he loves.

While some fans have their own personal favoriteGod of Warsaga, both have some outstanding video game moments, and both are integral to the overallGod of Warstory, and Kratos' core character arc. That being said,God of War2018 did abandon the Greek saga somewhat, and that’s a move that the nextGod of Warjust physically can’t make with the Norse saga.

God of War’s Norse Saga Is Here to Stay

Abandoning The Greek Saga Was Part of God of War 2018’s Plot

A soft reboot of the franchise,God of War2018 saw Kratos embark on a new adventure inNorse mythology’s Nine Realms. By its nature,God of War2018 felt very much like a fresh start for the franchise, with its gameplay looking and feeling completely new, and its plot no longer revolving around any member of Greek mythology. It seemed as though the Greek saga was completely forgotten about inGod of War2018, right up until the point where it wasn’t.

About halfway throughGod of War2018’s story, Kratos needs to return home to dig up his Blades of Chaos. It’s at this moment that fans realizeGod of War2018 hasn’t left the Greek saga behind completely, it’s only pretended to forget about it just like Kratos has.God of War2018 only doesn’t focus more on the Greek saga’s events because Kratos wants to continue hiding from them.

God of War Can’t Abandon The Norse Saga in The Same Way

WhenGod of War Ragnarokends, it feels as though this is a good place to leave the Norse saga behind, with Kratos having helped save the day, Atreus setting off on his own adventure, and the Norse saga crew all going about their own business. However, it doesn’t seem like fans will be leaving the Norse saga behind anytime soon, if ever.

InGod of War Ragnarok’s Valhalla DLC, Kratos goes on a journey of self-reflection, eventually coming to terms with his Greek saga actions, while also tying it to the lessons he’s learned during the Norse saga. The end of the DLC sees Kratos agreeing to help Freya as the new God of War for the Nine Realms, or maybe the God of Hope. Regardless of his role, it’s clear that the nextGod of Warwon’t be able to just drop the Norse saga, with so many character relationships and plot threads still left hanging in the air right now. Even if Kratos were to venture into a new mythology in the nextGod of War, some Norse saga cameos are almost guaranteed to happen, at the very least just to explain the events that transpired between games.
