When not busy creating award-winning games likeDeath Stranding,Hideo Kojimacan often be found talking about his love of films on social media, whether that be in the form of movie posters or photos of memorabilia.

As he did last year, this past week thevideo game writer, producer, and directorshared a list of his top five films of 2019 with his followers on Twitter. His favorite movies of 2019 wereParasite, Border, The Irishman, An Elephant Sitting Still,andCold War.The movies cover a wide range of genres from a variety of countries and include both independent titles and those starring well-known Hollywood actors.

Parasiteis a Korean dark comedy,Borderis a fantasy film about trolls from Sweden,Cold Waris a love story set in post-war Poland,An Elephant Sitting Stillis a Chinese drama, andThe Irishmanrecounts the tale of a truck driver turned hitman who may have been involved in the slaying of Jimmy Hoffa.

As shown by the movies he named, Hideo Kojima has aneclectic and varied taste. He has spoken openly about the impact that movies have had on him, both personally and professionally, and proclaims in his English Twitter page description that his body is 70% made up of movies. This love of film comes through clearly in the strong cinematic feel of many of the games he has directed.

Kojima has credited a number of different films as influences for the highly successfulMetal Gearseries, ranging fromDawn of the DeadtoGoldfingerto2001: A Space Odyssey. The character of Solid Snake was a direct reference to Snake Plisskin as played by Kurt Russell inEscape from New York, and Russell was even offered the role of Snake inMetal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eaterbut turned it down. EvenDeath Stranding, released in November 2019, features a Very Easy Mode for movie fans or those who don’t play games.

In the past, Kojima has spoken about how he has turned down offers to direct movies. After the release ofDeath Stranding, however, the game director has stated that in the future, his video game development studio Kojima Productions will delve into making films. “If you can do one thing well,” he stated, “then you can do everything well.” Needless to say, for fans of his work who have long admired his prowess at creatingcinematic gameswith deep stories that are not easily forgotten, that was exciting news to hear.
