Summary
IfHogwarts Legacy’s unprecedented sales have proven anything it’s that adapting theHarry PotterIP to an open-world action-RPG with a custom character creator was highly favorable. It wouldn’t be surprising to learn thatHogwarts Legacywas originally intended as a one-off due to how much Avalanche packed into it, and yet if there are sequels planned there is still quite a lot that can be added, iterated on, or improved to makeHogwarts Legacy 2’s impact equally considerable.
Fast travel is incredibly convenient since Floo Flame points are abundant. Indeed, especially with how intricate and layered Hogwarts is it is almost essential to have a Floo Network established for ease of access to individual floors or towers, particularly becauseHogwarts Legacydoesn’t allow players to fly near or within the castle. Of all the many ways Avalanche could iterate on what madeHogwarts Legacythe alarming success story it is in terms of sales, fast travel as a quality-of-life feature has two solutions.
Hogwarts Legacy 2 Needs Fewer Floo Flame Fast Travel Points
In an open world as unsuspectingly large as that ofHogwarts Legacyit may have been inevitable that it would contain fast travel.Hogwarts Legacyis forgiving this way, knowing that much of players’ time will be spent at Hogwarts or Hogsmeade but that they’ll also be on the other end of the Highlands now and then, and therefore having to fly back and forth each time would be a slog. The castle itself would be a nightmare to navigate since thesimultaneously linear and labyrinthine interior of Hogwarts is sprawling.
Fast Travel is Customary, But Shouldn’t Be Default
Instead, players are only required to travel anywhere on their own once so long as they continueactivating Floo Flame points in their travels. However, so many are available that what is intended to be a navigational shorthand becomes how players can choose to traverse the map almost exclusively.
The simple solution would be to reduce the number of Floo Network points on the map, which would likely be agreeable since flying around on a broomstick is satisfying enough as a means of transportation. Otherwise, the number of Floo Network points could remain the same if Floo powder, the substance that individuals normally need to toss into a flame to teleport themselves, was added as an actual in-game item in the sequel.
Hogwarts Legacy 2 Can Make Floo Powder a Resource
If Floo powder was a resource inHogwarts Legacy 2that players needed to spend on Floo Network points, that could greatly impact how frequently players may want to exploit the fast travel feature. Moreover, it would add an interesting layer to Floo powder to have certain amounts travel players farther on the map, meaning players could need to procure a larger amount of powder if they wanted to instantly take a trip somewhere further on the map.
Hogwarts Legacy’s wild ambitions led to an action-RPG teeming with freedom regarding player choiceand applying a restriction on that freedom in a fun way would make a world of difference in a sequel. Plus, if mechanics were added to make broomstick flight more engaging, perhaps fast travel could be overlooked entirely.
This was a point of debate when it came toMarvel’s Spider-Man 2, which had phenomenal fast travel means in a game where fast travel is arguably redundant due to how fun and fast its traversal is. If the same could be said forHogwarts Legacy 2’s traversal, maybe it could afford to make some changes to its Floo Flame functionality.
