Sonic the Hedgehoghas seen a fair boost in popularity in recent weeks thanks to the success of theSonicmovie, leading to an influx of new fans interested in exploring more of the franchise. How appropriate then thatSonic Forces, the most recentSonicgame, happens to beone of the free PS Plus games for this month, making for a good and cheap opportunity for new fans to jump in.
Released in November 2017,Sonic Forceshasn’t gone down as one of thebestSonic the Hedgehoggamesfor most fans, having originally launched to mixed reviews that basically summed it up as not doing much to reinvigorate the series formula. That being said, the game still has plenty to offer newcomers hungry for more Sonic after the movie (such as the ability to play as a customizable character of their own creation), and that includes one of the franchise’s most popular staples, Super Sonic.

What Is Super Sonic?
Super Sonic was introduced back in 1992’sSonic the Hedgehog 2and was an upgraded form players could unlock for Sonic upon gathering all seven of theChaos Emeralds, the game’s most valuable collectibles. Aside from turning the normally blue hedgehog bright gold, it would grant him increased speed and jump height, along with making him invincible against enemies. The catch, though, is that the form consumed rings, the series’ main collectible and protection against attacks, and would run out if players ever ran out of rings.
How To Unlock Super Sonic
While most of the games sinceSonic 2have relegated Super Sonic to something used exclusively for final boss fights,Sonic Forcesbrings the form back to being something players can actually use in regular levels. Best of all, they don’t even need to spend time collecting the Chaos Emeralds to do so.
That’s because Super Sonic is actually available in a free piece of DLC forSonic Forces, like theSanic DLC, which means unlocking it is as simple as a quick download. Once that’s done, players will be free to select Super Sonic before entering any of Sonic’s stages, after which they simply need to collect 50 rings to activate the form. Of course, the original ring-draining restriction applies here as well, so players will have to be mindful of their ring count while they blaze through the game’s levels.
Sonic Forcesis available for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
