Marvel’s Avengersmultiplayer game mode, War Zone, will not allow players to pick the same hero more than once, meaning if one player picks Iron Man, then the rest of the party has to choose a different hero. So, players won’t be able to do things like use four Hulks simultaneously.

However, Phillipe Therien — theMarvel’s Avengersdirector behind War Zone — may have just teased that the multiplayer game mode will allow players to choose the same hero as their peers' in the future. Whether or not he teased this with the intent to do so remains unseen, but the way he worded the statement revealing the information is hard to ignore, nonetheless.

After Crystal Dynamics finished itsfirst War Table Presentation forMarvel’s Avengers, Phillipe Therien took to Reddit to host an “Ask Me Anything” session. Here, a Redditor by the name of MrStealKiller asked whether players would be able to choose two of the same hero when queuing up for games, and Therien responded with, “That won’t be possible at launch.”

For obvious reasons, the “at launch” portion of this statement is what fans are grabbing onto. War Zone may not allow players to wreak havoc with four gods of thunder whenMarvel’s Avengerslaunches, but Crystal Dynamics could change this at a later date.

The probable reason why players can’t choose more than one hero in the first place — aside from balancing purposes — is becauseWar Zone missionsstill follow the main storyline. During their game mode, players are still on a mission to stop AIM from enforcing their will on the world, so War Zone fits into the same continuity as the main story. Since four Captain Americas don’t exist in this continuity, players can’t pick more than one.

War Zone missions are replayable, though, soCrystal Dynamics— should it decide to implement the feature — could allow players to pick the same heroes if they’re replaying a mission they’ve already completed. This method not only gets around the continuity problem but the balance one too since balance isn’t nearly as important on missions done for fun instead of completion.

Marvel’s AvengersHero Progression system also already allows players to customize their heroes to play differently from the heroes of other players — at least, according to Crystal, it does. With that in mind, using the same heroes shouldn’t impact the situations presented in War Zone too drastically.

Marvel’s Avengersreleases on September 4 for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One. PS5 and Xbox Series X versions are also in development.
