TheMetroseries went in a new direction withMetro Exodusand its massive, open world-like locations, and it seems like developer 4A Games is looking to evolve the series even further with the next entry in the post-apocalyptic universe. In a post celebrating the studio’s 10-year anniversary, aMetromultiplayer game has been confirmed to be in development.
4A Games was recentlyacquired by THQ Nordic’s parent group, with plans in place to continue theMetroseries as well as kick off new franchises. As it turns out, theMetroseries will be going in a new direction, but that does not mean that singleplayer will not be abandoned. Before detailing the multiplayer project, 4A Games ensured that the team is still “committed to delivering a great story driven single player experience” as well, as that is “what the Metro series is founded on.”

The team went on to say that, while anotherfully single-playerMetroofferingis very much on the way, multiplayer has always “been an ambition for 4A Games” and is something that it can finally do due to a partnership with Saber Interactive. The studio acknowledges that “some of our fans have concerns whenever they hear multiplayer mentioned,” with 4A Games tackling the multiplayerMetrogame’s development head on as an attempt to quell any doubts or feats.
The studio ensures fans that multiplayer will not feel tacked-on or rushed when it arrives, and that it will make sense within theMetrouniverse as well. The mode will keep the same tone as the single-player gamesinspired by theMetrobook series, and 4A Games says that it will ensure that the multiplayerMetroproject is “not to the detriment of our single-player ambitions.” They also went on to say that nothing is set in stone regarding the multiplayer game’s release.
As said within the post, there is no guarantee that the nextMetrogame will be multiplayer only. Likewise, the team says that it is equally unclear if “the next game will have single and multi-player in the same package.” Whether the nextMetrogames separate multiplayer and single-player is unclear for 4A Games at this time, so fans will have to remain patient and wait on more details regarding the next release inthe horror-filledMetrouniverse.
The final bit of information in the post confirms that the nextMetrogames will be available on PC and next-gen consoles, something that makes sense regarding4A Games’ recent comments on PS5’s power. While no details regarding the actual gameplay and genre of the mode are shared in the post, 4A Games seems to be taking a thoughtful and careful approach with theMetromultiplayer game.
A newMetrogame is currently in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X.
