Mojang has just announced a free update for last year’sMinecraftMinions DLC that will introduce some new content. The update coincides with the release ofIllumination’s latest animated film,Minions: The Rise of Gru, with new content based on the Vicious Six antagonist characters depicted in the movie.
Minecrafthas come an extremely long way since the early playable development builds in 2009, having become an absolute juggernaut in the gaming industry and updated with countless new features. Entire new dimensions have been added in the form ofThe Nether and The End, new biomes, mobs, and blocks have made it into the game, and numerous overhauls to the terrain generation system have all shapedMinecraftinto a surprisingly deep and expansive game despite its simplistic blocky visuals. New content is continually in the works, ensuring thatMinecraft’s enormous fanbase always has something to look forward to.

The Minions DLC forMinecraftis based on the hugely popularDespicable Meanimated film series, with players taking on the role of the supervillain Gru inMinecraftform. Players use a variety of gadgets and build a growing force of minions that can be used to perform various tasks. Gru can fill up his villain-o-meter by sneaking and racing and participating in other activities leading up to the final confrontation with the Vicious Six. The update adds a new version of this confrontation based on their appearance inMinions: The Rise of Gru, along with a free in-game yellow minion hoodie for the player’s dressing room.
Minecraft’s marketplace hosts a surprising number of DLC content including texture packs, game modes, and whole new themes such as anAngry Birds-themed DLC.Minecrafthas always had a very strong community of independent content creators and modders who have been extremely innovative in their creations and the Minecraft Marketplace allows creators to reap some financial benefits from their hard work. This has proven to be fairly lucrative for enterprising content creators, withMinecraft’s marketplace having earned hundreds of millionsof dollars since its inception, profit which has been split with creators.
The Minions DLC can bepurchased on theMinecraftMarketplaceand is available only through the Minecoins currency, at a price of 1350 Minecoins which translates to a roughly $10 USD investment. The Minions DLC was created by the Cyclone team of content creators, who are also known for particularly high-quality efforts such as their Buzz Lightyear DLC.
