Actress Miranda Otto will reprise her role as Éowyn in New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation’s upcoming anime feature,The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. ​​​​​​Otto portrayed Éowyn in the second and thirdLord of the Ringsfilms.

Directed by Kenji Kamiyama,The War of the Rohirrimcenters around the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand, the mighty King of Rohan, a character from the J.R.R. Tolkien book’s appendix. The story is set 183 years before the events chronicled in the originalLord of the Ringstrilogy.

In theLord of the Ringsfilms, Éowyn is a Shieldmaiden of Rohan and King Theoden’s niece. She develops a close relationship with Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen). Despite her desire to fight for her people, Éowyn is forbidden from serving in the Rohan army. Despite this barrier, Éowyn disguises herself and marches into battle alongside hobbit Merry Brandybuck and her fellow countrymen inReturn of the King.She even slays the dreadedWitch-king of Angmar, Lord of the Nazgûl, during the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. Deadline broke the news of Otto’s return forThe War of the Rohirrim, in which she will serve as the narrator.

Otto joins other recently announced cast members includingSuccessionstar Brian Cox, who voices King Hammerhand, Gaia Wise (A Walk in the Woods), who will play Hammerhand’s daughter Hera, and Luke Pasqualino (Snowpiercer) will portray Wulf. The voice cast also includes the talents of Lorraine Ashbourne (Netflix’sBridgerton), Yazdan Qafouri (I Came By), Benjamin Wainwright (BBC One’sWorld on Fire), Laurence Ubong Williams (Gateway), Shaun Dooley (Netflix’sThe Witcher), Michael Wildman (Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw), Jude Akuwudike (Beasts of No Nation), Bilal Hasna (BBC’sSparks) and Janine Duvitski (ITV’sBenidorm).

The War of the Rohirrimis being executive produced by Oscar-winning screenwriter Philippa Boyens, who co-wroteThe Lord of the RingsandThe Hobbittrilogies withdirector Peter Jackson. She joins her fellow Oscar-winners Alan Lee and Richard Taylor, who also worked onThe Lord of the Ringsfilms, and Tolkien illustrator John Howe. The film is produced by Joseph Chou (Blade Runner: Black Lotus), while Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou penned the screenplay from a script by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. Production on the film is currently underway at Sola Entertainment.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrimpremieres in theaters on June 09, 2025.
