While it still lacks an actual sequel,Octopath Travelerfans will soon be able to try out the next best thing: mobile titleOctopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent. According to the game’s official Japanese Twitter account, the game is planned for a 2022 release (no exact month has been given yet) and publisher Square Enix will be sharing more information around mid-February, so likely next week. The account adds that fans pay attention to its official Facebook page for further details.
As a reminder,Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continentis a prequel, set before the events ofOctopath Travelerin the same land of Osterra. While it features a new cast of playable characters, it’s said that characters from the original game will make an appearance.

Just like the original, it’s a turn-based RPG, although it’s free-to-play and includes in-app purchases and a gacha mechanic to obtain new characters. Also, battles are no longer limited to four party members, with players able to take eight characters into a fight.
Unlike the original, which featured eight different story routes with their own main protagonist,Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continenthas only three. Each one is instead centered around one of the three titular champions, who serve as the main villains: Herminia the Witch of Greed,Titus the Hero, and Argust the Playwright.
It released in Japan in October 2020 for Android and iOS devices and was reportedly very popular, being downloaded 3 million times in only two days. However, it was never entirely clear if the game would ever come to the West and the fact that anOctopath Travelerfollow up is a free-to-play mobile game rather than a proper sequel for consoles may not sit well with everybody.
There’s so far no word on whether there will ever actually be anOctopath Travelersequel or not, but the game has become more readily available since it launched as a Nintendo Switch exclusive in 2018. The year after it released on PC, followed by a Stadia release in 2020 and is now even on Xbox One via Game Pass.
Fans also still haveTriangle Strategyto look forward to next month. While not a sequel, development is being led by Tomoya Asano, who was producer onOctopath Travelerand theBravely Defaultseries. A tactical RPG similar to theFinal Fantasy Tacticsgames, it’s launching as a Switch exclusive on March 4 and will retainOctopath Traveler’s HD-2D graphic style.
