Who Is Sentomaru?

Sentomaru is a character that fans were introduced to before the two-year timeskip. He made his debut during the Sabaody Archipelago arc, where he was seen commanding the many Pacifistas that appeared on the island. Sentomaru fought againstLuffy and the Straw Hat Pirateson Sabaody, completely dismantling them in the process. Although initially, it felt as if it was Kuma who was fighting against the crew, it was revealed soon after that the person they were fighting wasn’t Kuma but a clone of him, also known as a Pacifista. These Pacifistas worked directly under the command of Sentomaru, meaning that he had to be strong. Luffy engaged Sentomaru in combat briefly and was completely overpowered by the strength of his Haki. Soon after, the Straw Hat Pirates were utterly eradicated by Kuma, which left Sentomaru unable to finish his job.

At this point in time, Sentomaru was not a part of the Navy. He simply worked as part of the science division but his integration within the Navy was not made official. It was only after the 2-year timeskip that Sentomaru held a high position in the scientific division of the Navy, evident from his Navy coat and the fact that he told Luffy that he had acquired this position.

Although Sentomaru and Luffy clashed only briefly, where the former overpowered the Straw Hat Pirate, it was quite clear to see that he held a deep respect for him. This was clear once again after the timeskip when Sentomaru arrested Demaro Black and the fake Straw Hats, saying that the real Straw Hat isn’t worthless like him. While Sentomaru didn’t play much of a role in the story up until now, Luffy did promise to see him later. Finally, now thatOne Pieceisin its Final Saga, more light is being thrown on the character of Sentomaru in the Egghead Island arc.

Sentomaru’s Past

With One Piece volume 106 comes the latest SBS corner and, much to the surprise of the fans, it talks about Sentomaru in quite some detail. Sentomaru is heavily involved in the current events of the Egghead Island arc and that only means that questions about him will be asked to Oda. Finally, Oda has revealed the past of Sentomaru to the fans.

According to Oda in one piece SBS volume 106, Sentomaru once lived in a village within a forest. There, he was feared by his people for his tremendous strength. The Navy heard the rumors of wild bears causing problems for humans on this island and, upon hearing this, set out to help the people. Vegapunk, the genius scientist, set out with them. Upon reaching the place, they saw a boy defeat the bears with his bare hands, using sumo techniques. This boy called himself King of the Mountain, and was revealed to be Sentomaru. Because the villagers feared him for his strength, he was abandoned. Vegapunk felt sympathy for him and decided to take him in, feeding his ever-hungry belly and taking care of him. Sentomaru was made the bodyguard of Vegapunk and he has held this position ever since.

Naturally, Sentomaru owes quite a bit to Vegapunk, which is very evident when looking at the current events ofthe Egghead Island arc.Even if it costs him his life, Sentomaru wants to protect Vegapunk, which shows his undying loyalty to the man who once saved him. Their close connection was hinted at previously in One Piece when Vegapunk suggested he saved him because the scientist once raised him when he had no one to turn to.

Sentomaru’s Connection To Vegapunk

Fans also know that Sentomaru is somehow connected to Kizaru. The two are quite close to each other, as was evident from the very first introduction of both these characters during the Sabaody Archipelago arc. Kizaru was looking for Sentomaru and the latter called him his uncle. Fans have been wondering for the longest time whether these characters are related by blood, however, the simple answer to that is no, there are not.

While they certainly do share a very close relationship and Sentomaru is often seen to be respectful of the Admiral, there are not related by any means. The reason why Sentomaru calls Kizaru his uncle is out of respect for him and nothing more.

Lucci attacks Sentomaru

While they respect each other and share a very interesting bond, fans might find them on opposing ends very soon. Kizaru is headed to Egghead Island with 100 Navy battleships to destroy Vegapunk, along with the island. Meanwhile, Sentomaru has prepared an army of 50 Mark 3 Pacifistas and both of them likely realize that they will be fighting against each other very soon. Whatever their relationship is might be explored a bit further in the manga, however, fans should not expect them to be friendly with each other anymore, even though they hold tremendous respect for each other.

On Egghead Island, Sentomaru has played a very important role so far. He has played the role of Vegapunk’s bodyguard perfectly. Sentomaru evenfought against CP0to save Vegapunk and received serious injuries in trying to protect him. What’s more, he was in control of the Seraphims until recently and, even now, when he is supposed to be on death’s door, he is trying his best to protect his benefactor.

Sentomaru recently activated the Mark 3 Pacifistas and ordered all of them to fight back. More importantly, he is also handling the evacuation of Egghead Island. He realizes what is going to happen to Egghead and, for that reason, he wants to save as many lives as possible. Knowing the fate of Ohara 22 years ago, he doesn’t want the same tragedy to repeat itself on Egghead, only worse. As such, he is currently trying to save as many lives as possible and, at the same time, prepare to fight back against the Navy. Essentially, Sentomaru has gone rogue and no longer is a part of the Navy. Fans should expect good things for his character in the Egghead Island arc as there is still quite a bit that he can offer to the story. For now, however, Sentomaru is heavily injured and will need some help, which could come in the form of the Straw Hat Pirates, once One Piece returns with Chapter 1087.
