Electronic Arts has just announced thatOnrushwill shut down its online multiplayer servers on June 13, 2025. Originally launched back in 2018, before EA acquired Codemasters,Onrushis an arcade combat-focused racing game where the primary goal isn’t necessarily to get from point A to point B the fastest, but rather to complete a variety of objectives while competing with the enemy team.

WhenElectronic Artsacquired Codemasters, all of the developer’s previous projects moved over to the new publisher’s umbrella as well, withOnrushbeing one of the active multiplayer titles. The game’s player base has slowly plummeted over time, however, and it has only taken a few more years for EA to decide that keepingOnrush’s multiplayer servers live was more trouble than it was worth.

According to EA,Onrushno longer has enough players to warrant keeping its servers up and running, and none of its multiplayer functionality will be available after August 01, 2025. With two years having gone by sinceEA acquired racing game developer Codemasters,Onrushseems to have been given time to try and find its niche, only to fail in doing so as time went on. While it is a shame that this is happening, it’s worth pointing out that all ofOnrush’s offline functionality will remain available, allowing players to enjoy the game’s single-player content.

One of the potential reasons behindOnrushnot having a player base in 2022 is that it only launched on a limited number of platforms. The game is available on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles, and it never came to any of the other popular platforms. In fact,Onrushwas inaccessible on Xbox for a whilewhen a security exploit was discovered, forcing Codemasters to remove it from sale until the issue was resolved.

Since its acquisition,Codemasters has moved on to developingNeed for Speedin conjunction with Criterion, and the rumor mill surrounding the next franchise entry is already working overtime, with leaks suggesting a bold new entry for the series. The loss ofOnrush’s online functionality doesn’t seem to be a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, then, and the lessons Codemasters learned while working on it are bound to be applied to its newer projects.

Gamers interested in seeing what Codemasters has been working on as of late should tune into thenewNeed for Speedgame revealthat’s slated for October 6. The franchise is bound to make a bombastic return to form following a three-year hiatus after the release ofNFS: Heat, and if the leaks are anything to go by, it’s going to make for an interesting change of pace.

Onrushis available on PS4 and Xbox One consoles.
