While it started as aDiabloclone,Path of Exileis an institution in itself. The game has been running for eight years, withPath of Exile’s Scourge expansion recently releasing.
While it now has its own identity,Path of Exileis still a loot based ARPG. Players will be spending a lot of time grinding for loot and building one ofPath of Exile’s ideal builds.

The Ultimatum and Scourge expansions forPath of Exilethrow a wrench into this process with an increased focus on corrupted items. But corrupted items are unpredictable, and so its best to know how they work ahead of time.
What is Corrupted Gear?
Corruption inPath of Exileis a complicated topic. Its effects are varied. A corrupted ring can gain poison immunity, for example, and armor can get reduced damage reduction. The number of possible bonuses adds another level toPath of Exile’s steep learning curve.
At the same time, corrupting gear might do absolutely nothing, just adding a useless “corrupted” modifier that doesn’t change stats. To make matters worse, a corrupted item can’t be improved or altered, save for changing slots and links at a crafting table. Players should only gamble with corruption on gear that’s been completely leveled up.
Corrupting Gear with Vaal Orbs
The most common way to corrupt items is with Vaal Orbs, a rare currency that players can find either from monsters or arcanist strongboxes. As expected, players are more likely to encounter them in Vaal side areas. They can also craft them with 7 Vaal Skill Gems and a Vaal Sacrifice fragment.
When applying a Vaal Orb to an item, it’s up in the air if it will have any effect –sometimes it does absolutely nothing.Path of Exileplayers should farm or tradefor a large amount ahead of time. Players can also attempt to bulk corrupt items by placing them in a storebox corrupted by a Vaal Orb.
Corrupting with the Altar of Corruption
Inside the Temple of Atzoatl area is an incursion area called the Locus of Corruption, upgraded from a standard corruption chamber. This has an altar of corruption. If a player gives an item to the altar, it has a 25% chance of gaining two corruption modifiers, and a 25% chance of being destroyed. It can also turn all sockets white, or reroll the item into a different rare item.
Path of Exileis available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
