It was quite an announcement in 2020 whenPlayStationconfirmed it was going into business with Discord. While there have not been any developments since then, a new image showingPlayStationauthorization on Discord suggests the service may be coming soon.

The news came in May of last year thatPlayStation and Discord were partnering, with talks of bringing their services together sometime in early 2021. What this means exactly has been left for fans to ponder, but the announcement alone has gotten many fans excited about the possibilities. Discord is arguably the leading communications method for gamers on PC, allowing players to talk individually in parties, or join channels and servers, whole communities dedicated to the games they love or just similar interests. There is the potential for native support on PlayStation devices to communicate through Discord that has fans looking forward to more information.

PlayStation’s integration with Discord may not be too far away, a new image showing the video game company amongst available connections on the communications app. The image comes from jankesjt in a since-deleted post to the official Discord subreddit, showing thePlayStation Network icon in Discord’s Connections tabin the user settings. According to a comment by jankesjt, “Discord Ships with every new update unused stuff,” and was, therefore, able to force enable the PlayStation Network Connection on by typing directly into the console. As this action is against Discord’s Terms of Service, the subreddit’s moderators removed the post, though the image is still viewable along with its comments.

Many theories aboutjust how integrated PlayStation and Discord will behave emerged since the partnership announcement. While PlayStation for years now has offered the ability to communicate through text and voice in its Party system, the dream is obviously that a player on PS5 and PC could communicate through their own devices natively.

Other features that would be convenient are the ability for players on Discord to see their friends' PlayStation online status and activities and the ability to share content like screenshots and videos from PlayStation to Discord. Players can currently list Xbox Live as a Discord Connection, though the integration extends as far as player visibility, with minimal communication options presently available.

With 2022 just starting, fans have finally entered the time to begin expecting a formal announcement from PlayStation regarding its Discord integration. In recent years, the multiplayer gaming landscape has welcomed crossplay with (mostly) open arms. Hence, it makes sense that a solid communication service likeDiscord can bridge the gap between different hardware. There is obviously game chat, but the integration of Discord can now extend communication to people playing single-player games, or just looking to talk to their friends. Hopefully,PlayStationhas some news to share with its players soon.
