There has been plenty of excitement for the PlayStation 5 of late, but today marks a special day in the history of thePlayStationconsoles. Guinness World Records have certified the PlayStation as the best-selling home video game console brand ever. This is an incredible achievement for the PlayStation and is also pretty timely, as the brand is celebrating its 25-year anniversary.

ThePlayStation 1arrived in 1994 in a market that was dominated by SEGA and Nintendo. Through working with third-party developers and using discs the console managed to differentiate itself in a competitive market. The PlayStation 1 went on to sell over 120 million units and despite the considerable competition the following generations of the console managed to maintain this high standard of success.

According to Guinness World Records, the PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4 have sold an accumulative total of 450 million units worldwide. This is an undoubtedly impressive figure and reflects how the consoles have largely dominated the market over the last 25 years. This success looks like it will continue as many already believe that thePS5 is destined for significant acclaim. However, another console war is destined to break out next year with the launch of a new iteration of the PlayStation and just like previous generations, it will be an interesting battle.

The jury is still out about whether Xbox’s Project Scarlett or the PS5 will win the next console war. What is apparent is that Sony will have gained some loyal supporters through the units it has shipped and the reputation it has built. There is no doubt that Sony has provided some of the best consoles the market has to offer. If this generation is anything to go by, Sony will be breaking half a billion units sold not long after the release of the PS5.

Reports already suggest that the PS5 is running games better than its competition, and the early rumors about the specs of the console are impressive. Whether the PS5 delivers on these reports remains to be seen, but many players will expect more quality consoles in the future that continue to build on the impressive legacy of PlayStation. For now, Sony’s gaming division will rightly be celebrating its sustained success that has lasted for a quarter of a century.
