Wednesday morning, Nintendo unveiled new information about its upcomingPokemongames,Pokemon Brilliant Diamond,Pokemon Shining Pearl, andPokemon Arceus. But for fans who just can’t wait until November for a newPokemongame,Nexomonhas another option to consider.Nexomonis aPokemon-like game from developer VEWO Interactive originally released in 2017 on mobile phones. Now VEWO is ready to bring the originalNexomonto consoles and has released a new gameplay trailer to help build some hype.

The shortNexomongameplay trailer runs less than a minute and a half long, but it covers a lot of ground. The trailer starts by working to make clear just how similarNexomonis to classicPokemontitles. It’s a2D RPGwith sprite-based artwork. The player takes on the roll of an adventurer, tamingNexomonand taking them battling through a huge world and a complex story. Players will meet a roster of diverse characters along the way in pursuit of becoming aNexomonmaster tamer.

Getting into more specific gameplay elements, the trailer confirms thatNexomonfeatures over 300 differentNexomonto tame, including evolutions. Interested gamers can see a broad sample ofhowNexomon’s gameplay compares toPokemonthroughout the trailer. Teams of up to sixNexomoncan be taken into battle, where they’ll fight using type-based abilities that work in a rock-scissors-paper combat structure just like inPokemon.

ButNexomonalso diverges fromPokemonin some interesting ways. One example that’s shown in the newNexomontrailer is the game’s skill trees. These aren’tcomplex ARPG skill trees, but there’s more depth here than in Pokmon. Every ability that aNexomoncan unlock is available within their skill tree, with higher power skills requiring theNexomongain experience and levels. The player can then select up to four abilities they want to use from theNexomon’s skill tree as they please, so long as they’re outside of combat.

Make no mistake,Nexomonmakes no apologies about being a gameheavily inspired byPokemon, only originally intended to tap into the mobile game market. And now that it’s a proven success, even releasing a sequel inNexomon Extinction, it’s looking to expand onto other platforms wherePokemonremains unavailable.

ForPokemonfans whose interest has been piqued,Nexomon’s console release date is quickly approaching.Nexomonlaunches on PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on September 17. PC gamers can check it out now, as it’s been available since 2020. Those who don’t want to wait can check out the sequel,Nexomon Extinction, today, as it already launched in 2020, too.

Nexomonis available now on PC and mobile devices, and will launch September 17 on PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
