An upcoming update for theResident Evil 4remake appears to be adding pay-to-win DLC in the form of premium weapon upgrade tickets that players can use to improve their weapons.Resident Evil 4released late last month to widespread critical acclaim, but there was some criticism aimed at missing features and game modes. One of the most glaring omissions was The Mercenaries, a mode that was unlocked in the original game by beating the main story.
TheResident Evil 4remake launched without The Mercenaries mode, but Capcom made it clear that it would be coming as a free update. The Mercenaries DLC is coming to theResident Evil 4remakeon April 7, but it seems it’s not coming alone. Thanks to the fact that the PlayStation Store has already updated in New Zealand, new premium DLC for theResident Evil 4remake has been revealed that would give paying players an advantage in the story mode.

This was first reported by Twisted Voxel, who noted that the prices for theResident Evil 4remake weapon upgrade ticketswould likely translate to $3 for 1 ticket, $7 for three tickets, and $10 for five tickets in the US. This DLC has not been officially announced by Capcom and has yet to appear in the US PlayStation Store at all, so prices may vary. Regardless, it’s safe to say that it’s going to upset someResident Evil 4remake fans.
While many fans may not think it’s a big deal for pay to win DLC like this to exist in a single-player game, there’s always the concern that changes could be made to the game balance to try to push players in the direction of the premium DLC. The existence of these tickets would also effectively make it easier for players with the cash handy to unlock theResident Evil 4remake Platinum trophy, as it will be much easier for them to fully upgrade their weapons, therefore tarnishing the accomplishment in the eyes of some gamers.
To be clear, weapon upgrade tickets are available forResident Evil 4remake playersto get in-game as well, though they are extremely rare, with players only able to get two total. The weapon upgrade tickets available in-game are pretty expensive, too, requiring a total of 70 spinels to get both of them.
As it stands,Resident Evil 4remake players should be able to safely ignore these microtransactions. While buying them may make it easier for those trying to get theS+ rank in theResident Evil 4remake, they’re not necessary at all with the game’s current balance in mind.
Resident Evil 4is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
