Game developers and publishers are always receiving requests and demands from their player-base to improve or add new features. This is especially the case for long-running games that receive regular support, especially free-to-play battle royale games likeFortniteandApex Legends. Sometimes these requests already line-up with the developer’s plans and sometimes they get flat out rejected. For instance,Apex Legendsplayers have wanted to see the game receive a replay mode, but Respawn has now stated that such an inclusion probably won’t happen.
Apex Legendsbalance designer John Larson made a recent appearance on the Apex Uncut podcast, alongside host and content creator The_FortniteGuy and pro player Zach Mazer, a member of Cloud9. When asked if a replay feature of some kind, such as the oneLeague Of Legendshas that lets players re-watch entire matches, would ever be implemented, Larson described it as quite an undertaking from a dev side of things and that he doesn’t think the game warrants it at this point in time. His comment can be heard in the video below from 49:28.

Replay functions are a common feature in other battle royale games, such as the aforementionedFortniteandPlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, so its absence inApex Legendsis noticeable. A replay mode would be a helpful tool for those who wish to improve their gameplay by analyzing their previous matches and for content creation. But, for the time being, players will simply have to make do without.
While Larson doesn’t go into any further detail regarding why it’d be difficult to implement, it’s likely becauseApex Legendssimply wasn’t designed for a replay feature in mind. It’s the same reasonwhy cross-progression hasn’t been added toApex Legendsyet, although that is one feature Respawn is actively working to include in the future.
Respawn is no doubt also prioritizing adding regular content to the game, as well as addressing other issues like the persistent cheater and DDOS problems. On top of that, it’s had to deal with a recent and severe hacking incident that renderedApex Legendsunplayable for a time. Those responsible had done it as a form of protest sinceTitanfallis suffering from hacker problems of its own.
Respawn has insisted that it’s fully aware ofTitanfall’s issuesand is working to address them. However, only a couple of people are still working on the series as a whole and probably means it’s still going to take a while for the problems to be completely resolved.
Apex Legendsis available on Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
