Irony is in, but earnestness is not. So it’s no surprise to hear that, for Johnson, “fun” is one of his motivations when writing.

While at the Golden Globes, Johnson was interviewed byDeadlineabout the status ofKnives Out 3. “No, I’m just starting right now to fish for ideas," Johnson said. “And I try my best not to think of actors too specifically when I’m writing, ‘cause I don’t want to get my heart broken if they’re not available. Right now, I’m just trying to fish for, you know, what would be fun to do next. So we’ll see.”

Johnson previously stated that he wasworking onKnives Out 3, but it seems that he’s still in the beginning stages of planning out the film. Johnson also said in that interview that he looks at what’s happening in the world when writing a Benoit Blanc mystery. The films are rooted in social commentary, and there will likely be plenty of real-world references and allusions in the next movie.

While Johnson speaks about “what would be fun to do next,” fans shouldn’t expect anything too outlandish.Johnson admitted that a crossover with the Muppetswould be fun, but he also stressed that he has plenty of places he wants to take Blanc first.Knives Out 3will probably share the same level of heightened reality as the first two films.

Johnson’s comments probably mean he’s not looking at any of thoseKnives Out 3fan castings. Johnson will probably only cast characters when the script is already written.
