Summary
Ramona Flowers has a particularly nasty past of breaking up or cheating on her then relationship, and that’s had major consequences for her most recent boyfriend, Scott Pilgrim.Scott Pilgrim Takes Offhas a large cast of baddies who are all part of the League of Ramona’s Evil Exes. Unfortunately for Scott, they’ve taken a particular interest in controlling Ramona’s life.
Being from the Big Apple and moving to Toronto, Ramona doesn’t exactly blend in. She’s in her mid-twenties, changes her hair color almost daily, and has a small purse that can carry a sledgehammer. After starting her job delivering mail, Ramona appears in Scott’s dreams, which has something to do with subspace. The two started dating, at which the League of Ramona’s Evil Exes reached out to Scott to try and ruin his new relationship with Ramona. Each of the evil exes Scott fights is harder than the last. Not only does he learn a little about Ramona’s past, but he learns more about himself. Towin the love of Ramona inScott Pilgrim Takes Off, he’ll have to defeat all seven of her exes, from a guy who thinks pirates are in, an A-lister movie star, and a rockstar, to a guy who likely invested in crypto at its peak.
Matthew Patel
Back in middle school in seventh grade, Ramona temporarily dated Matthew Patel, her first evil ex. The relationship only lasted a little more than a week and the two kissed only once. The only reason Ramona dated Matthew was because he was the only non-white and non-jock kid at school and his mystic powers helped her scare off any jocks interested in her. Eventually, Matthew moved very far away and the two never saw each other again.
Unfortunately for Scott, Matthew took the breakup badly and joined the League of Ramona’s Evil Exes. Matthew was Scott’s first fight. Scott, however, was unaware that Ramona had any evil exes, let alone Matthew being the first. This was even after Matthew took the time to make Scott aware of such things.
The two fought hand-to-hand at the local bar whereScott’s band Sex Bob-ombwas playing. But, it wasn’t much of a fight for Scott. While Matthew was using his magic powers to summon Demon Hipster Chicks, who has some striking resemblance to Ramona, Scott delivered a jumping uppercut. Matthew explodes into a pile of coins as enemies tend to do. His total worth was $2 and some change, not enough to get Scott back to his apartment.
Lucas Lee
While many people can only dream of dating a celebrity, Ramona can say she actually did. However, Ramona only started dating Lucas Lee, her second evil ex, around high school, well before his fame. According to Ramona, Lucas was nothing more than a“whiny little grease-haired skater”back then. Ramona and Lucas started dating only because Lucas pestered Ramona enough until she relented. Ramona and Lucas didn’t do much but sit around and smoke and someone else caught Ramona’s eye. Lucas then went off to become a hit movie star.
Scott and Wallace Wells, Scott’s cool gay roommate, find Lucas at Casa Loma. The fight between Scott and Lucas wasn’t as enticing as Matthew’s, however. Scott becomes enamored by the fact he’s talking to a celebrity and gets caught off guard. Lucas tossed Scott at Casa Loma, rendering Scott unconscious. When he wakes up, Lucas gives Scott a break and offers him a deal. Scott can pay Lucas off and Lucas will go about his way, but that doesn’t sit right with Scott. In themovie adaptation ofScott Pilgrim, Scott had to fight several of Lucas’s stunt doubles.
Scott, knowing Lucas likes to skate, asks Lucas if he can show off a cool trick by grinding down a set of stairs. But, there are too many stairs and Lucas says it’s impossible. Playing to his ego, Scott goads Lucas, who then takes the bait. Lucas was right, however, and the ruse defeated him in the end. Scott was able to get nearly $14 off Lucas, but not his autograph.

Todd Ingram
In a strange twist of fate, Ramona dated Todd Ingram, who also dated Scott’s ex, Envy Adams. While in high school, Ramona cheated on Lucas with Todd. Todd disappeared for a couple of weeks and then came back with “vegan” powers. Todd, to show his love for Ramona, blasts a crater into the moon using his newfound powers, causing massive damage to the earth completely unrelated to the story. The relationship only lasted until Todd left for vegan college and Ramona went to The University of Carolina in the Sky. Lucas and Envy start dating after this, and Lucas blasts another crater into the moon in a very original way.
Scott, Ramona, and their friends go to a bar to see Clash at Demonhead, a band led by Envy with Todd on bass. After the set, the group went backstage for an awkward chat. A battle ensues between Scott and Todd after Scott learns about Todd’s past relationship with Ramona. Scott wasn’t keeping up with his vegan diet and that caused the Vegan Police to show up and blast Todd with a “de-veganizing ray.” In his weakened state, Scott headbutts Todd. Scott was worth a little less than $16 but he did get Scott an extra life.
Roxie Richter
Ramona had an exploratory phase back in college where she hooked up with her roommate Roxie Richter. The relationship only lasted until Ramona graduated. Somewhere along the way, Roxie joins the league as Ramona’s fourth evil ex.
The fight between Scott and Roxie played out multiple times, but Scott ultimately couldn’t hit a girl. In the comics, Scott gets the gumption to tell Ramona that he loves her and gets a cool sword called the Power of Love, which he uses to defeat Roxie. Roxie blows up into a bunch of cute animals like the capsules inSonic the Hedgehog.The Scott Pilgrim movieplays out differently; Scott hits a weak point behind Roxie’s knee, sending her into ecstasy and defeating her.
Kyle and Ken Katayanagi
Some people double date, but Ramona takes it up a notch when she dates twin brothers Kyle and Ken Katayanagi without either knowing, making them the fifth and sixth exes. When it’s discovered that Ramona is cheating on them both with each other, the two form a pact to do everything together.
Scott had to fight many robots before he faced Kyle and Ken in the comics. In the movie, Scott and his friends join abattle of the bandsagainst Kyle and Ken. In both situations, Scott defeats the twins and gets about $80 from Kyle and $75 from Ken plus a $2 bonus for beating them both at once.
Gideon Graves
Possibly, the only reason Scott has to fight Ramona’s evil exes is because of Gideon Graves. Gideon is the leader of the League of Ramona’s Evil Exes and her seventh ex. Ramona and Gideon met in New York. However, the relationship was heavily one-sided and Ramona left after feeling like Gideon was ignoring her. This was particularly true, since Gideon likened Ramona to a toy he could dress up. Afterward, Gideon posted a drunken rant on Craigslist, to which the other six exes responded and formed the league.
It’s later revealed that Gideon is the man behind the curtains puppeting the league, but it’s a little too late for Scott. Ramona has disappeared, leaving him to fight Gideon alone. Scott eventually fights Gideon and loses. Lucky for Scott, his extra life gives him another chance. Gideon is nearly defeated in a second attempt.
Scott discovers, in the comics, that Gideon is controlling Ramona (and has his other exes all frozen on ice). After she’s freed, Scott and Ramona defeat Gideon in one quick X-shaped slice. In the movie, Ramona is freed from her control after Knives kicks her in the back of her head. Scott and Knives defeat Gideon, with Scott delivering one last blow with a well-timed kick to Gideon’s head. Gideon explodes into around $7.7 million in quarters finishing off the series.
Scott Pilgrim
In a twist of fate, Scott and Ramona have a temporary gap in their relationship and Scott becomes something akin to the very enemy he’s been fighting. While he doesn’t join the league, he becomes cold and angry, especially once he becomes paranoid that Ramona is going to leave him for Gideon. While the fight with Gideon was eventually going to happen, Scott’s ambition to fight Gideon Graves aligns with the same goal sought after within the League. It wasn’t until Scott took on a second life, realized he wasn’t the greatest boyfriend, and defeated Gideon before he and Ramona got back together.
In the end, Scott gets the girls of, or from, his dream.Scott Pilgrim Takes Offwas released on Netflix on July 30, 2025, but Scott’s story seems to have taken a different turn. Fans whoread the comics and watched the moviemay be surprised by the latest adaptation of a cult classic.
