Dwayne Johnson’sBlack Adamhas been rumored to appear inShazam! Fury of the Godsever since the film was first announced. While those rumors remain unverified,Shazam 2director David F. Sandberg responded to them with his signature brand of humor.
Shazam 2is believed to feature a cameo by Black Adam primarily because the two heroes are arch-enemies in the pages of DC Comics, with Billy Baton being granted the powers of Shazam by the Wizard long after Black Adam had been bestowed with the same abilities until he was banished for using them for evil purposes. While key figures involved in theShazamandBlack Adamfilmshave hinted at the possibility of crossovers, concrete plans for such an event have not been announced.

While Sandberg has already addressed therumors of Black Adam appearing inShazam 2, his previous statements obviously weren’t enough, so the filmmaker posted a comic to Instagram commenting on the matter. In the comic, a cartoon Sandberg is shown discovering notes that read, “the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change,” signed only by a bicep measurement. While Sandberg is unable to find the culprit behind these notes, the comic shows a character who is clearly meant to be Johnson in various disguises where each note shows up. Eventually, theShazam 2crew suggests to Sandberg that Johnson is the one responsible for the notes, arguing that theBlack Adamstar is a chameleon.
To prove their point, the crew tells Sandberg that the lead characters inDisney’sJungle Cruiseand theJumanjisequels are both played by Johnson, which hilariously appears to be a complete shock to theShazam 2director. Consequently, Sandberg says that he started seeing Johnson everywhere and therefore cannot say with absolute certainty that he’s never met the man playingBlack Adam. Rachel Zegler, who stars inShazam 2, later commented on Sandberg’s post, saying, “David this is so [f***ing] funny.”
Obviously, the comic strip was meant to be a bit of fun, and Sandberg has postedhumorous content aboutShazam 2before. Curiously though, one could argue that Sandberg is trying to avoid confirming or denying a cameo by Black Adam inShazam 2by saying he can’t be “100% sure” if he’s met Johnson or not.
Then again, as previously stated, the comic could just be a bit of fun at the expense of Johnson. Fans don’t have to wait much longer to find out if Shazam and Black Adam will cross paths, as both characters will return to the big screen in their own films toward the end of the year.
Black Adamis scheduled to release in theaters on June 16, 2025, whileShazam! Fury of the Godsis slated for a July 04, 2025, debut.
