The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrimfans have a clever theory about the design of the Dawnguard helmets that appear in the DLC of the same name. After Bethesda releasedThe Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrimto massive sales success and widespread critical acclaim, the company followed it up with large-scale expansions that added new story content, gameplay features, and more to the open world game. Thefirst major expansion released forSkyrimwasDawnguard, a DLC about an organization dedicated to hunting and killing vampires.
Skyrim’sDawnguardDLC sees players in the middle of a conflict between the titular Dawnguard and avampire group known as the Volkihar Clan. Throughout the expansion, players are able to interact with members of the Volkihar as well as the Dawnguard, who have special armor that set them apart from other groups in the game.

Reddit user D1mitiri_HD recently uploaded an image of the Dawnguard helmet fromSkyrim, along with a theory about why the helmet is shaped the way it is. As pointed out by D1mitiri_HD, the Dawnguard helmet has a spike on the chin. The Reddit user theorizes that the spike could be used as a way for Dawnguard soldiers to keep vampires from biting their necks. If a vampire bites a Dawnguard soldier while they have the helmet on, they would risk getting stabbed by the spike.
Commenters on the post disagree as to whether this is an intentional design choice by Bethesda or if the spike was just added to the helmet for aesthetic reasons. Some commenters think that the theory makes sense, while others aren’t convinced that the spike would really be that effective in stopping vampires from biting the necks ofDawnguard soldiers.
Skyrim’sDawnguardexpansion was popular at the time of its release for its horror-themed storyline and conflict between vampires and the Dawnguard. The DLC was also notable for allowingSkyrimplayers to transform into a Vampire Lord themselves, giving them a new suite of abilities to unleash on their enemies, though also cursing them with some additional weaknesses. It will be interesting to see if theupcomingElder Scrolls 6allows players to turn into Vampire Lords as well, or if that feature will be left inSkyrim.
As it stands, very little is known aboutThe Elder Scrolls 6beyond a brief teaser trailer that seemingly suggested thatthe game will take place in Hammerfell. Bethesda is busy working onStarfieldright now, but fans should learn more about the nextElder Scrollsgame some time afterStarfield’s 2023 launch.
