Summary

Snoop Dogg and his son are teaming up to form a game studio to help minority creatives publish content onFortnitevia its Unreal Editor. Following the unveiling by Epic Games early this year, developers have already found creative means of utilizing Unreal Engine for Fortnite (UEFN), also known as Creative 2.0. Now it appears that Snoop Dogg is diving intoFortniteto build on UEFN’s potential.

Snoop Dogg isn’t a new name when it comes to gaming. The celebrity rapper has been a game streamer for a few years and was even a member of the esports group FaZe Clan until last April. He has gained more popularity in the gaming sphere in recent times, mostly due to his collaborations withCall of Duty. Back in July, Activision announced that it would be adding Snoop Dogg and Nicki Minaj skins toCall of Duty, which was followed up by aSnoop Dogg finisher inCall of Duty: Modern Warfare2almost two months later. In any case, his latest venture marks a first for the celebrity as a potential games publisher.

In partnership with his son Cordell Broadus,Snoop Dogg is officially setting up a game studio, dubbed Death Row Games. According to the announcement, the studio is set up such that minority creators can build and publish games toFortnitethrough the UEFN. Broadus emphasizes that it’s a matter of “representation of the culture in these sectors” as opposed to “just being the talent.” He further pointed out that the vision for Death Row Games is “to provide access and opportunity to diverse creators to empower them” and “broaden the narrative around what gaming is and can become.” It remains to be seen what transpires out of Death Row Games and Broadus says that the studio is still in its early stages.

Of course, this isn’t the first time aFortnite-focused studio was established. Back in July,Bungie co-founder Alex Seropian opened a studiocalled Look North World to develop games exclusively for theFortniteecosystem. Through the UEFN, the studio stated it hoped to develop AAA games and would be able to publish new games every two to three months, with regular feedback from the player base.

Historically, representation in the gaming industry has often been lacking when it comes to people of color. Fortunately, things have notably improved in recent years with representation taking a bigger spotlight. With the recent commercialsuccess like the Miles Morales-featuredSpider-Man2, Cordell Broadus and Snoop Dogg’s Death Row Games now has an interesting opportunity ahead to build on the growing interest.
