The following article contains spoilers forThor: Love and ThunderMjolnir and Stormbreaker each have a lot of great strengths about them, which can make it hard to determine which weapon is better than the other. Thor obviously has some strong opinions about each one inThor: Love and Thunder, having wielded both.
The God of Thunder is definitely confused about why Mjolnir called out to Jane instead of him, which complicated his relationship with both weapons throughout the film. Taking a look at their origin stories, powers, and personalities, these three categories can help determine which is the betterLove and Thunderweapon.

Origins
Both of these weapons have been around long before the events ofLove and Thunder, and their origin stories are similar, but not identical. Although both weapons were made on Nidavellir with Uru metal and the help of Dwarves, Thor was able to take a hands-on approach during the creation of Stormbreaker.
Stormbreaker wasn’t created until 2018, but arguably has a much cooler origin story than Mjolnir. Created with the help of the Dwarf Eitri andGuardian Groot, Stormbreaker is the weapon Thor wielded during the conclusion of the Infinity Saga. Thor risked his life making Stormbreaker, absorbing the energy from the star used to power the forge. While on the brink of death after taking a beating from the star, Stormbreaker gave Thor the strength to survive and was later used to kill Thanos.
Mjolnir, meanwhile, has been around a lot longer than Stormbreaker, having once belonged to Thor’s sister, Hela, before Odin imprisoned her. Mjolnir’s journey with Thor in the MCU started way back in 2011, when Odin enchanted the weapon to possess the powers of Thor and only be lifted by someone who was worthy. Thor and the hammer have been on many adventures together since theGod of Thunderproved himself worthy in Phase 1, saving lives all across the galaxy.
Despite Thor’s long-standing relationship with Mjolnir, the stakes were much higher when Stormbreaker was crafted. Thor wasn’t present for the creation of Mjolnir like he was for Stormbreaker, which makesthe origin story of the axe stand out far more than that of the hammer.
Powers
Stormbreaker and Mjolnir seemed quite evenly powered for a while, with only small differences apparent in their strength. The distinction between the two has become a bit more defined thanks toLove and Thunder, and they now seem like significantly different weapons.
One of Stormbreaker’s most notable powers is that it’s capable of summoning the Bifrost all on its own. This is what made it so desirable toGorr the God ButcherinLove and Thunder, because he was able to use it to open the gates of Eternity, without needing to call upon someone else like Hiemdall to open the mythical bridge. Stormbreaker combines the best of both worlds, razor-sharp on one end and flat like a hammer on the other. It’s more than double Mjolnir’s size, and allows Thor to manipulate the weather. When forged duringAvengers: Infinity War,Eitri told Thor that Stormbreaker was meant to be the most powerful weapon in Asgardian history.
Like Stormbreaker, Mjolnir also allows Thor to wield thunder and lightning; however, it’s not capable of summoning the Bifrost. The magic hammer did develop a power Stormbreaker couldn’t, though, and it’s able to detach its broken pieces to attack multiple enemies at once, before coming together again. Obviously Mjolnir has some major strength, since it was able to transform Jane intothe Mighty Thorand postpone her death. With that being said, using Mjolnir is also what killed her, since every time she picked up the hammer it drained the life from her mortal body.
Overall, though, Stormbreaker seems to have the edge over Mjolnir once again. Strong enough to open the Bifrost, reach Eternity, and manipulate storms the same way Mjolnir can,Stormbreaker’s powers are greater than that of the mythical hammer.
Personalities
What makes Mjolnir and Stormbreaker so special is that they’ve each got their own personality and are at least somewhat sentient, similar to the enchanted Cloak of Levitation thatDoctor Strangehas. Thor’s weapons were definitely more human inLove and Thunder, which made them feel more like actual characters.
Stormbreaker was very much like a jealous lover in the new film. It is shown rocking the space-boat when Thor speaks fondly about Mjolnir, and floating humorously on screen to remind the God of Thunder that he already has a weapon. Stormbreaker’s behavior inLove and Thunderis undoubtedly passive-aggressive, since it’s being forced into direct competitionwith Mjolnirfor Thor’s attention.
Mjolnir, on the other hand, is fiercely loyal. Even though Thor doesn’t seem to remember asking the hammer to protect Jane no matter what, Mjolnir obviously took that promise very seriously. Knowing that Jane was at the end of her life and still had some unresolved issues, Mjolnir reassembled itself to give both Jane and Thor the closure they needed. Thanks to Mjolnir’s interference, Jane was able to become a hero and Thor was able to tell her how much he loved her.
Stormbreaker’s presence in the filmmade for more laughs, butMjolnir definitely has the better personality, remaining fiercely loyal to Thor. But although the relationship between Thor and Mjolnir is stronger than the one he has with the axe, it’s hard to deny thatStormbreaker is the better overall weaponinThor: Love and Thunder.
