Summary

Rocksteady has apparently implemented support for Denuvo DRM inSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, just a few short days before it is set to go live for all players.Suicide Squadisn’t being released until February 2, but Rocksteady attempted to give those who ordered the Deluxe edition early access to the game 72 hours ahead of time. However, this was cut short when Rocksteady shutSuicide Squad’s servers down for several hours to fix a bug that caused players’ story progress to be fully complete upon booting the game up.

For many weary Arkhamverse fans, this is just another bad omen surroundingSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which has generated a fair deal of controversy over its apparent live-service model over the past year or so. Much of this backlash has been centered aroundSuicide Squadinitially requiring playersto always be logged into the game’s online servers, even while playing through the single-player story campaign.Suicide Squad’s battle pass and gear system have also soured some gamers on the title, though Rocksteady developers have assured players that their newest title will retain what they loved about theBatman: Arkhamgames.

A new wrinkle inSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s divisive online modelhas just been revealed, as reported byPCGamesN. A recent update onSuicide Squad’s Steam page states that the game “incorporates 3rd-party DRM” in the form of Denuvo anti-tamper software. A changelist log on Steam DB also includes this, having been added on Saturday, January 20.

Denuvo’s DRM Divides PC Gamers

Denuvo is a brand of DRM (digital rights management) that aims to protect a video game’s source code from piracy and emulation. It has been used in several games since it was introduced in 2014 and isnow being implemented for the Nintendo Switch. This has drawn the ire of many in the gaming community for several reasons, including Denuvo causing performance issues as a result of high CPU usage, degrading SSDs from excessive reading and writing, and potentially putting players’ privacy at risk due to its online requirements and kernel-level access of a user’s system.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leaguehas already come under fire for a plethora of different reasons, and the implementation ofthe controversial Denuvo DRMwill likely be yet another source of outcry in the week leading up to the game’s launch. While plenty of gamers wish otherwise, Denuvo remains a popular DRM of choice for many developers, as evidenced by its use in the upcomingSuicide Squadgame.
