Ubisofthas just wrapped up an announcement adjusting its fiscal outlook for the year significantly downward. The announcement came alongside the confirmation thatWatch Dogs Legion,Rainbow Six Quarantine, andGods and Monstershave all been delayed and will launch in later 2020. And it seems the crux of the issue started with two underperforming games in 2019.Ubisoftconfirmed that bothThe Division 2andGhost Recon Breakpointhave underperformed significantly.
Chloe Woitier reported Ubisoft’s comments on Twitter, confirming the publisher’s disappointment with the two major 2019 releases. Details regardingThe Division 2’s struggles were not provided. It was simply referenced as “part of Ubisoft’s commercial failures.” Ubisoft explains that it’s difficult to launch sequels to games with multi-year live services, and also says that innovation isn’t capitalized on without sufficient development time.

Ubisoft focused much more heavily onGhost Recon Breakpoint’s struggles, which it seemed particularly disappointed in. First, Ubisoft says that it’s surprised byBreakpoint’s underperformance, as the game was received well atE3 2019and Gamescom, but that both critical reception and sales at launch were very disappointing. It then lists three reasons why it believes Breakpoint floundered.
The first reason is again that live service sequels are challenging and need more development time, or perhaps space between releases.Innovations inGhost Recon Breakpointwere said to be rejected by a large part of the community, though those who did continue to play averaged over three hours a day. Finally, Ubisoft so says that the game didn’t feature enough “elements of differentiation” and that the game’s strengths suffered as a result.
It’s particularly interesting that the consequence of Ubisoft’s fiscal reporting is the delay of all its currently announced titles, as well as what appears to be a flooding of game releases in 2020. It’s unclear if Ubisoft is prioritizing giving its games more development time or if it’s rescheduling its line-up to take advantage of the forthcoming new generation of consoles. Either way, Ubisoft has confirmedRainbox Six QuarantineandRoller Championshave been delayed beyond June 06, 2025, thatWatch Dogs LegionandGods and Monsterswill release between July 1 and June 01, 2025, and that two unannounced AAA games will launch between July 08, 2025, and July 26, 2025.
