Horror movie fans often countScreamas their most favorite film from the genre, and it was super exciting to check outScream (2022), the first movie in the franchise since 2011’sScream 4. Fans will never complain about revisiting Woodsboro, Ghostface, and amazing characters like Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and Dewey Riley (David Arquette). But the recent news thatScream 6is definitely happening and Courteney Cox is coming back as her famous character Gale Weathers does bring up a good question: isScream 6necessary?

While horror fans are never going to miss a newScreamfilm and it does seem like this popular franchise could continue on for several more films, as the demand is always going to be there, there are many reasons whyScream 6might be a bad idea.

Scream (2022)is a “requel” and explores the idea of making a new horror movie when an existing, beloved franchise has been around for a long time. But when the franchise returns for its latest installation, what will the story be? The new characters? The new killer (or killers) and motive? It’s a lot of fun getting to know Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega) who is definitely one of thebest horror movie main characters. Tara’s ability to go after Ghostface, deal with the threat amongst her group of friends, and bond with her older sister Sam (Melissa Barrera) is incredible. But the movie wraps up the story by the final credits, making fans wonder what plot could be explored and who the new Ghostface could be inScream 6.

If there is going to be aScream 6and aScream 7, then the horror franchise should follow in the footsteps of the newHalloweentrilogy put out by Blumhouse Productions. 2018’sHalloween, 2021’sHalloween KillsandHalloween Endswhich will release in 2022all tell the same story of Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) dealing with Michael Myers all over again. The movies might not be quite as fantastic as the original 1978 film, but the movies do feel like a complete story.

Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers in Scream 2022

IfScream 6is going to be any good, it would have made sense for the franchise to do something similar. Instead of telling audiences that Amber Freeman (Mikey Madison) and Richie Kirsch (Jack Quaid) are the killers at the end ofScream (2022), why not hold the big reveal of the killers until the end ofScream 7? This would allow the franchise to give fans huge cliffhangers at the end ofScream 5andScream 6and leave the audience wanting more and excited to keep watching the new batch of movies. Of course, it’s too late for that now, which begs the question of what the killer inScream 6will be looking for and what their motivation will be.

Part of the reason to watchScream (2022)was to see returning characters like Sidney, Gale, and Dewey. Sidney is theultimate horror movie final girland it’s sweet and satisfying to see Sidney married, raising kids, and coming back to Woodsboro to fight Ghostface yet again. Fans want the best for Sidney and know she has been put through more than most people. So what will Sidney do inScream 6? Fight Ghostface yet again? Even though horror fans couldn’t possibly love theScreamfranchise more, it does seem a bit unrealistic and unbelievable that there could be yet another killer who is tied to Sidney and what she has been through.

WhenScream (2022)was announced, fans wondered how the franchise could continue without beloved and celebrated director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson. Guy Busick and James Vanderbilt wrote the script, withReady Or Notdirectors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin directing.Scream (2022)is a great movie: fun, scary at parts, and a good blend of old and new. But what willScream 6be like?

According toDIgital Spy, Kevin Williamson was interviewed on the “Horror Queens” Bloody Disgusting Podcast and said that he wanted Jill Roberts (Emma Roberts) to remain alive and to appear inScream 5. Williamson said, “Jill went to college, and then murders started on the campus. And it was a killer who knew she was the killer from the last film. So the killer kept trying to expose her, so she would have to kill to keep it covered up. So it was killer meets killer. And Sidney was a professor at that school.” This could have been cool, and then maybeScream (2022)could still have been a requel that explored that idea, withScream 6still being connected to the last two movies.

While horror fans will have fun watchingScream 6and it’ll be interesting to see how the franchise continues, fans definitely have some questions about what the new horror film will be like.
