World of Warcraft: Shadowlandshas just recently announced its second–and likely final–major content patch, Eternity’s End. In an email sent out by Blizzard advertising this announcement,World of Warcraftmay have given an unexpected hint that draws a more direct connection to Azeroth than players may have originally thought.
Eternity’s End takesWorld of Warcraftplayers to the realm of Zerith Mortis, a primordial place that once served as forge for the ancient First Ones to craft the multiverse. Though fascinating in its own right, many players were dismayed that the story seemed to be so detached from the world of Azeroth most ofWorld of Warcrafttakes place on.

The diction of the words used in the Blizzard email are reminiscent of one of the first lines heard from the Jailer, the primaryantagonist ofShadowlands. During the opening scenario of the expansion, the Jailer proclaims “Death comes for the soul of your world! All that you see–all that you know–will be undone!” While this could be seen simply as villainous bluster, the mounting evidence revealed with Eternity’s End may suggest more–especially considering the beam of energy visible in the screenshot of the Jailer from the final raid, which happens to be the same yellow and blue as Azeroth’s lifeblood, Azerite.
This new hint has manyWorld of Warcraftlore hounds buzzing. InWorld of Warcraft, some planets like Azeroth carry the souls of the god-like Titans. At the end of theLegionexpansion, Sargeras, anothertitan and majorWoWantagonist, impaled a gigantic sword into the planet’s crust, causing Azerite to seep from its wounds. Around the same time, the Arbiter, a construct created to sort souls into their proper afterlife, was broken by an event still uncertain to players. This, plus the etymological similarities between the words “Azeroth’“and “Zerith,” has some speculating Zerith Mortis may be located within, or at least strongly connected to, the soul of Azeroth, which in turn might have had something to do with the Arbiter’s malfunction.
It is important to remember all of this is, indeed, speculation. It is just as likely the Blizzard email was simply invoking the protection of Azeroth’s soul as a catch-all, considering theJailer is trying to destroy theWarcraftmultiverse. There is no hard proof to any of these connections, and though it is unlikely for players to discover the truth until Eternity’s End releases, the prospect of a more direct connection to Azeroth will continue to fuel more speculation in the coming months.
