When theXbox Series Xwas first unveiled in December 2019, its sharp rectangular shape lent itself immediately to funny comparisons with other similarly shaped objects. The most prevailing comparison was that the console looked like a fridge, which Xbox then capitalized on by producing a limited run ofXbox Series X mini-fridges that sold out almost immediately.
Other funny jokes were made about the shape of theXbox Series X, including its similarity to the black monolith from2001: A Space Odyssey. However, the console’s simple design has also made it the perfect blank slate for creative fans to customize and decorate themselves.

Many officially designed limited edition Xbox Series X consoles have been produced, including one to celebrate therelease ofMs. Marvelon Disney Plus. But these official designs are mainly used for the promotion of specific newly released games. Standard Xbox Series X consoles that have been decorated by fans are able to be far more specific and can be made to suit the decor of that fan’s home. This is exactly what a Reddit user named Bioshocky has done with their Xbox Series X, which they have designed to look like a vintage Coca-Cola vending machine.
Some fan-designed Xbox Series X consoles can be eye-catching, with built-in lights and other additions, but Bioshocky has clearly gone for something far more subtle. The funny idea for a vending machine does make use of the Xbox Series X console’s shape, but the vintage Coca-Cola design itself is so well done that when the console is turned off, it would simply look like a stylish ornament. The picture Bioshocky shared shows the console and its matching controller next to a record player and model airplane. All of these retro-styled items complement each other in a way that the Xbox Series X’s blank original design wouldn’t have.
Between Microsofts Xbox Series X and Sony’s PS5, it is clear that, for this generation of consoles, Xbox has gone with the more aesthetically subtle design. While both thePS5 and Xbox have been the subject of many internet memesbased on their respective looks, the PS5 seems to have been designed to stand out in a room, while the Xbox Series X is more likely to blend in.
Fans customizing their Xbox Series X consoles seem to try and incorporate the shape of the console into the design somehow, such as with Bioshocky’s vending machine theme, while PS5 owners have primarily been using one of the consoles large sweeping panels as a canvas todraw some incredible artwork directly onto the PS5 console.
